February 22, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women's tennis team dominated in its dual on Wednesday, sweeping the Eastern Michigan Eagles, 7-0, at the Aztec Tennis Center. Today’s win puts the Aztecs at 2-0 in series history against EMU.

The Aztecs started strong in doubles competition, grabbing the point in two matches. Alli Valk and Olivia Larsson secured the first victory against Anna Veleva and Alejandra Barcelo, 6-3. Jana Buth and Paola Diaz followed suit, notching a 6-3 win against Marie Mayerova and Andrea Martinovska to wrap doubles play.

In singles action, the Aztecs held onto their momentum as Kennedy Davis controlled court two, downing Ani Gogvadze, 6-1, 6-4. Shortly after, Mia Smith finished off Maria Paula Ribero, 6-2, 6-1, in the fourth-seeded match. With a 3-0 lead on the afternoon, Berta Acero defeated EMU’s sixth-seeded Barcelo, 6-4, 6-3, to give San Diego State a victory.

After determining the dual’s outcome, the Aztecs continued to stack up wins in matches three, five and one. Diaz topped EMU’s Martinovska, 4-6, 7-5, 10-4, while Larsson closed her match with a victory against Veleva, 6-1, 5-7, 11-9. Buth brought in the last win of the day on court one, taking down Marie Mayerova 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(3).

Now at 4-6 on the season, SDSU will complete its three-match home stand this Saturday as they take on No. 17 Arizona State. First serve is set for noon at the Aztec Tennis Center.
