SDSU drops first conference match to UNLV

March 31, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team hoped to turn its season around with the start of conference play, but fell to the Rebels 7-0 on Friday at the Aztec Tennis Center. UNLV remains perfect in conference play (3-0) while today’s loss marked the fifth straight for the Aztecs.

In doubles play, UNLV’s Paola Artiga and Anna Bogoslavets notched a 6-2 win in the third seed against freshman Alli Valk and senior Olivia Larsson. On court two, senior Kennedy Davis and freshman Mia Smith were also unsuccessful against Rebels duo Carol Yang and Cristina Moroi, falling 6-2 and allowing UNLV to claim the doubles point.

The Aztecs tried to bounce back in singles but were not able to finish with any wins. Diaz was the first Aztec to drop, falling 6-0, 6-1 on the third court to UNLV’s Bogoslavets. On the fifth court, freshman Berta Acero had a tough go against Paola Artiga, dropping 6-1, 6-4. In the second seed, senior Kennedy Davis snapped a five-match win streak, falling 6-2, 6-3 to Aiwen Zhu and UNLV clinched the dual by claiming the first three singles matches.

Buth faced a tough adversary in 27^th-ranked Carol Yang, who defeated Buth 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the top seed. Larsson continued to battle Jovana Kenic on court six where she fell in the third set, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8, while Smith also took her match to three sets and eventually fell to En-Pei Huang, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6), 12-10.

The Aztecs fall to 5-14 on the season following today’s loss. Up next, SDSU travels to Reno, Nev., for its second conference dual against Nevada on Sunday, April 9, with first serve set for 11 a.m.
