June 11, 2023 (Lakeside) – Barrel racing is a rodeo event where contestants attempt to complete a clover-leaf pattern around three barrels in the fastest way possible. Depending on the size of the arena, 15 seconds and up are average times.

On June 8, the Lakeside Rodeo grounds held barrel racing practice, including timed sessions. These fun events are regularly held and are free to the public to attend.

There is a  charge to contestants and requirements to practice horse safety after the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) outbreak.

Both youths and adults participated in this fast sport. Riders race around three barrels and then accelerate their horses for the final run to the clock. In completion, the rider is penalized five seconds for knocking over a barrel.

Though girls and women dominate this sport, males are sometimes seen.

Barrel racing is a fun sport and watching is entertaining, too--plus you will meet welcoming folks.
