August 31, 2018 (Alpine) -- The Alpine Fire Survivors Fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 8, in Alpine will provide entertainment while raising money for people who need help after the recent West Fire. A car show, Kids Zone activities, blues band Chet and the Committee, food for sale, an opportunity drawing, vendors and more are scheduled from 2 -7 p.m. at the American Legion Post at 3328 Alpine Blvd.

Tickets are $20 each. Fire survivors, volunteers on the day of the fund raiser and children 12 and younger are free. Advance tickets include five free drawing tickets.  Vendor booths are $50 for a table and a free meal.

“It’s to raise money mostly for the survivors who were uninsured,” said organizer Stephanie Sorrels, director of the West Fire Victim Supply Post. “Any funds that come in will go directly into the hands of the people who need it. There’s quite a few people who are struggling really badly.”

The West Fire on July 6 in east Alpine destroyed 38 homes and damaged 15 others. Flames also damaged or destroyed 26 other buildings and a commercial venue.

Sorrels, a Boulevard resident who had lived in Alpine, voluntarily worked to help survivors during the West Fire. She then immediately established the supply post.

Those who will benefit from the Alpine Fire Survivors Fundraiser will include such people as the man living in his car now in Ocean Beach and the woman struggling to live in a place with no electricity, Sorrels said.

She said the Alpine Fire Survivors Fundraiser needs help with the event, including volunteers to work it, sponsors and more people to buy advance tickets.

“We’re still trying to find organizations and businesses to sponsor food,” said Sorrels.

As far as the victim supply post, she said, it will probably close about October.   That’s because there are few post volunteers left, she now has to take her children to school and she is returning to her college classes, Sorrels said.
