December 10, 2010(La Mesa)--The City of La Mesa today announced plan to enhance its community notification system, coined La Mesa e-Gov, to encourage residents to keep informed and take steps to protect themselves in an emergency.

This consists of promoting existing e-services including Request Tracker and Notify Me, and subscribing to new communication services such as Nixle and Twitter. By offering several methods of delivery (web, email or mobile), the City anticipates that residents will find a tool that works for them and will be more likely to access information about their city. In addition, the City is promoting the County of San Diego, Office of Emergency Services AlertSanDiego effort. Citizens can find a link to AlertSanDiego, along with additional information about La Mesa e-Gov on the City website at www.cityoflamesa.com.

The goal of La Mesa e-Gov is to get the word out about the varied e-services available, and ultimately increase communication between government and residents. One of the many e-services available is Citizen Request Tracker, a tool used to report a problem and track a request for service such as pothole repair, code compliance, or request for fire inspection. It can be accessed on the City Website and iPhone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Another existing service that is already very popular is Notify Me, in which users can sign up to receive an email or text message for information about a particular subject. For instance, “La Mesa City Council” notifies subscribers when the Council Meeting agenda is made available, and “General Plan Update” notifies subscribers about the update process, surveys, meetings, community workshops and other important events.

La Mesa’s new services include Nixle and Twitter. Nixle’s Municipal Wire is an identity-certified and secure communication service that allows law enforcement and government agencies to connect with residents over web, email or mobile, at no cost to the agency. Subscribers decide from which agencies they want to receive information, and have access to both community news as well as public safety alerts. Citizens should subscribe to “City of La Mesa” to receive updates from the various City Departments including La Mesa Police Department, and to Heartland Fire & Rescue for updates from La Mesa Fire Department.

The City will use Twitter to provide information about programs, activities, projects and events. Each time the City posts a Calendar or News & Announcements item to its website, Twitter users will automatically receive those updates via their own Twitter page or mobile. All citizens are encouraged to find the tool that best fits their lifestyle.

La Mesa e-Gov brings the City a step closer towards achieving its goal to improve community outreach and to more effectively provide information to the community, as outlined in the City’s “Targets for Action.” For additional information, go to www.cityoflamesa.com.
