“Being America’s most expensive city is anti-Dr. King.”—Shane Harris

January 14, 2024  (San Diego) -- Civil rights leader Shane Harris and the People's Association of Justice Advocates  will serve hundreds of unsheltered individuals and low-income families with a free breakfast on Martin Luther King Day, January 15, from 9 a.m.to 11 a.m. at the Living Water Church, 1550 Market Street, San Diego.  Harris will give an MLK Day address announcing new policy efforts to combat poverty, calling new efforts to raise sales taxes in what has already been deemed America's most expensive city 'anti-MLK' as well as calling out San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria for failing to demonstrate dr. King's policies as San Diego further prices out the working class under his leadership

San Diego has the fourth highest homeless population in the nation. Low income families who are facing significant odds due to the costs of inflation and being priced out of America's most expensive city.

The MLK Holiday is the only national holiday designated as a day of service. Dr. King would have been 95 years old Monday and was killed in Memphis, TN April 4,1968 as he was preparing to put together a national march and movement on poverty.

"We are serving a free meal to people Dr. King would have spent this day with,” Harris says. “San Diego is not living up to Dr. King's final mission to combat poverty and support the working class by making our city more affordable to live in.” . Monday Harris is also expected to blast a new effort by some union leaders to raise the sales tax in San Diego County.

Harris will be joined by Chris Nafis, Senior Pastor, Living Water Church, with food provided by Chef Jay Morris.

Dr. King was killed April 4,1968 on the verge of declaring a national march on poverty. He was assassinated in Memphis, TN where he was expected to lead protests over sanitation workers who were dying on the job and were not being paid livable wages. King was fresh off his call for America to not go to war with Vietnam arguing the money could be better spent to combat poverty in America.

Harris will announce new initiatives to combat poverty in San Diego and will underscore Dr. King's dying wish to "end poverty in America". San Diego has the fourth largest homeless population in America and has been declared America's most expensive city.
