January 4, 2023 (Anza Borrego) – The Anza Borrego Foundation will lead a hike on Coyote Mountain in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park on Sunday, January 14 from 7 a.m.to approximately 4 p.m. Hikers will cljmb Coyote Mountain on an eight-mile route with an elevation gain of about 2,500 feet.
Meet: Meet at Anza-Borrego Foundation Administrative Office: 587 Palm Canyon Dr. #122, Borrego Springs, CA, 92004 Note: This location is different from the State Park store, but in the same shopping center. The office is next to Kendall’s Café, here’s a link to a map. The group will carpool and/or caravan to the trailhead.
Cost: Non-member – $45.00, ABF Member – $35.00, Student – $20.00

Description: This eight mile hike with 2,500 feet in elevation change is not for the faint hearted! If you’re looking for a challenge to start the new year, look no further. Join hikers extraordinaire Sicco Rood and Mark Remy, State Park scientists, and Anza-Borrego Foundation on the second of ABF’s Adventure Series of hikes.
This is an unconventional and very adventurous route that you have likely never done before. The terrain will be cross country hiking with many rocks and boulders. Be prepared for loose rocks making some sections slippery (this is where trekking poles come in handy to prevent falls). The vegetation is sparse, and the route is very sun exposed, but there are incredible views essentially the entire way. You’ll probably use your whole body on this hike and have a fantastic story to share.
This is not an interpretive hike, but we’ll discuss desert and hiking safety.
Participants must be in good physical condition and able to travel long distances in the desert over rough, uneven, and steep terrain. Please assess yourself honestly. ABF asks that anyone with medical conditions, such as bad knees, asthma, heart conditions, back problems, or medications that can’t be administered during the hike, please refrain from participating. Leaders have the right to turn away any participant that comes unprepared for the adventure.
Limited to 20 hikers.
What to bring:
Water (about 3-4 liters recommended)
Lunch and snacks for a long day
Clothing layers to remove – it will be cold in the morning and warm up throughout the day
Sun protection: a good hat, sunscreen, neck gator or bandana
Excellent hiking shoes or boots
Hiking poles
Headlamp
Bad weather: If the forecast calls for heavy rain, thunderstorms, or high winds, the hike will be cancelled and possibly rescheduled.

Cancellation Policy: Notification must be received at least 7 days before the first day of the event if you need to cancel and wish to receive a refund. For cancellations made after the 7-day deadline, the nonprofit ABF cannot issue refunds for any reason. If ABF cancels a program, it will issue a full refund or credit.
