Aztecs take seven wins on Saturday

September 29, 2018 (San Diego) - San Diego State women's tennis finished the second day of its annual SDSU Fall Classic I, claiming two doubles victories and five singles wins on Saturday.

In doubles play, freshmen Agustina Rimoldi Godoy and Ellie Ashley notched a sweet 6-3 victory over UTEP’s Milena Baigorria and Rine Nozaki in the red draw, while sophomore Abbie Mulbarger and freshman Aesha Patel defeated Autum Prudhomme and Martina Lo Pumo (GCU), 6-1.

The Aztecs were not as fortunate in the black doubles draw, with senior Jenny Moinard and Mia Smith dropping a 6-2 decision to GCU’s Celia Morel and Emilia Occhipinti, while senior Magda Aubets and sophomore Nnena Nadozie fell 6-2 to Meredith Jones and Ashleigh Harvey (AFA).

Moving into singles play, Ashley continued her success from her morning doubles matchup and logged a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sibel Demirbaga (CSUN) in the silver round robin draw, but teammate Patel was unable to come back in the third set, dropping a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision to GCU’s Valentina Mokrova in the black draw.

In the red draw, Rimoldi Godoy faced a tough three-set loss to UTEP’s Erandi Martinez, 0-6, 7-5, 6-3, while Mulbarger faced a similar fate against AFA’s Kristin Kerrigan, dropping her 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 decision.

In the white bracket, Aubets kept control over AFA’s Meredith Laskey to go on and claim a 6-1, 6-3 victory, while Nadozie dominated in her match against Meredith Jones (AFA) to mark a 6-4, 6-0 win and advance to the bracket’s championship match.

Smith and Moinard both found success in the gold singles draw, with Smith taking down Celia Morel (GCU) in two with a 6-4, 6-3 finish and Moinard holding off AFA’s Elizabeth Barnickel 6-2, 7-6 (4).

The tournament concludes tomorrow, beginning with doubles action at 9 a.m. and singles play immediately following. Admission to Fall Classic I is free and fans are encouraged to park in P7 on the corner of 55th Street and Montezuma Road. The Aztec Tennis Center is located just beyond Tony Gwynn Stadium, SDSU Softball Stadium and the Aztec Aquaplex on the northwest edge of campus.
