August 18, 2023 (La Mesa) - Football is officially back and for week one, ECM Sports headed to Grossmont, where the Foothillers opened their season against the Cavers of San Diego High.

The Cavers kicked off the scoring on their first drive of the game with a march downfield and a sneak in sophomore running back Miles Johnson.  But the Hillers did the same thing and did it faster.  Senior back Quentin Jones made the catch at the goal line and took it in and senior wideout Stephen Tomala caught the two-point conversion.  But it was short-lived as a pick by senior corner D’Angelo Besikof led to senior Jayden Wade’s touchdown catch and the Cavers survived a wild first quarter with a 14-8 lead.

The Hillers tied the game in the second and tried for another two pointer, but it was no good.  Grossmont got their revenge with six minutes left in the half when senior quarterback Hudson Herber found his target in the endzone for the score.  The Hillers completed the touchdown pass with a minute left in the half to head to the locker room with a comfy 28-14 lead.

Both teams took a breather from scoring in the third, but towards the end of the quarter, Grossmont tallied again to go up by three scores and start the season on the right foot with a 34-14 win. Coach Anthony Lawrence gets his first win as Grossmont’s head football coach.
