July 18, 2016 (Los Angeles) - Five San Diego State water polo players earned a spot on the Golden Coast Conference All-Academic Team, the league announced Friday.

The Aztec representation on the squad included Elizabeth Bilz, Alyssa Diacono, Taylor Gums, Katy Schneider and Mikayla Vessey.

To be eligible for the all-academic team, student-athletes needed to carry a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, played in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests and be classified as a full-time student who completed a minimum of one semester at their institution.

For Diacono and Gums, they were recognized for a third time, while Bilz, Schneider and Vessey were all first-time recipients.

The quintet was a part of a San Diego State team that won the GCC regular-season title for the third consecutive season and captured its first postseason tournament championship. In securing the GCC tourney crown, the Aztecs earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship where they finished in eighth place nationally.
