July 18, 2011 (El Cajon) – A fire that began around 1:35 on a hill above the 2600 block of Windmill View Road in Fletcher Hills briefly threatened several homes this afternoon.

Heartland Fire & Rescue credits quick action by about 30 firefighters, along with "the fact this hillside was recently cleared of heavy brush by hired workers and goats, creating a defensible space" with limiting the fire to only half an acre. No structures were burned and there were no injuries.

A strike team was called out, including firefighters from Heartland Fire & Rescue, serving El Cajon and La Mesa, along with fire crews from Santee, Lakeside, and San Diego Fire. A helicopter also assisted in swiftly dousing the blaze.  The fire was extinguished in less than 20 minutes, plus 15 minutes spent on mopping up and watching for hot spots.

"Homeowners in the area came out to thank firefighters for their quick response, while firefighters thanked them for their pre-planning in creating defensible space around their homes," a press statement issued by Heartland Fire stated.

The defensible space work was done by Environmental Land Management hired by the homeowner owners association for the community.

There was no damage to structures. Cause remains under investigation, according to Heartland Fire dispatch.
