July 7, 2009 (San Diego)--A new chapter was added to the history books at San Diego State University on July 1. The arena on the SDSU campus has been known as Cox Arena ever since it opened its doors 1997. But Wednesday, the name officially changed to Viejas Arena.

The major Viejas Arena signs, including over the main entrance and the sign along Highway 8, went up this week. Crews are working on hundreds of other sign locations, as the Viejas Arena name is unveiled across the campus.

Viejas Arena is home to the SDSU Aztecs men’s and women’s basketball teams. The arena also hosts annual graduation commencements, concerts and other events.

The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians has inhabited southern California and northern Mexico for thousands of years. In fact, their ancestral lands include the land under the arena, so tribal leaders say seeing the Viejas name on campus is like a “homecoming” for them.

Leaders from Viejas and SDSU plan educational and cultural exchanges for students, faculty and tribal members as part of the new Viejas Arena name.
