Local stores pitch in to help with hair-raising project to make oil-soaking mats and booms

Santee (May 12, 2010) – It’s a big, hairy deal when a national franchise mobilizes 690 stores to help with the Gulf Coast oil spill cleanup. You can help, too—simply by getting your hair cut at any Sport Clips store, where hair clippings are being gathered daily and shipped to Matter of Trust, a nonprofit organization that is making oil-soaking mats and booms from hair and fur. “Each of our Sport Clips stores collects approximately two pounds of clippings at the end of the day,” said Terry Klinker, team leader of Sport Clips in Santee. “We have many locations in coastal and Gulf states, and team members from stores across the country are ready and willing to pitch in on this effort.”

To date, Matter of Trust (www.MatterofTrust.org) has received 3,682 commitments from salons, pet groomers, wool farmers and others to participate in this massive effort to clean up one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.

“Now at the Gulf Coast, people are stuffing booms. Hair and fur coming in from our thousands of member salons and groomers into recycled nylons coming in from all 50 states and around the world!” the website proclaims. “Salons and beachlovers all over the Gulf Coast are organizing Boom making parties - They're calling them BOOM B QUE's .”

Matter of Trust seeks additional participants.
