April 11, 2015 (Washington D.C.) – A nationwide recall of hummus products has been issued by Sabra Dipping Company due to possible contamination with Listeria. The recall includes 30,000 cases which were distributed to retail outlets nationally including supermarkets and food service outlets.

Hummus, a food dip made with chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic, is popular in the Middle East and here in San Diego’s East County, which has a large Middle Eastern population.

Listeria is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.  Healthy people may experience high fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Consumers who have purchased any of these products are urged to dispose of or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may call toll free 1-888-957-2272, Monday – Friday 9 a.m. to  4:30 p.m.  Central Standard Time.
