April 7, 2023 (Jamul) – By a unanimous vote, the Jamul-Dulzura Community Planning Group on March 28 approved a letter sent to Mark Slovick, deputy director of San Diego County’s Planning & Development Services.  The letter asks County staff to take action on several concerns to mitigate impacts of  Jamul Casino’s plans to build a hotel and event center.

The planners voice concerns that the tribe’s plans do not adequately address potential traffic, fire safety, environmental and noise concerns.

The recommendations include:

  • A new traffic study be conducted by a leading consultant such as Fehr & Peers, who previously did comprehensive studies in the Jamul area;
  • Require that all traffic mitigation projects required for the original casino be completed;
  • Requiring the Jamul Indian Village to provide maximum occupancy figures;
  • Update the Fire and Emergency Plan and include technical details on how  proposed moveable glass walls and windows would perform under extreme wildfire conditions such as “baseball sized embers” experienced in the area in the past;
  • Identify multiple emergency evacuation routes;
  • Determine whetherthe 225-foot-height of the hotel has been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration and whether a red signal light atop the hotel may violate Jamul’s “Dark Skies’policy;
  • Have Caltrans remain as the lead agency, with the state and county coordinating to attain mitigation measures and enforcement of codes and policies to protect the public and the environment.
