March 15, 2015 (San Diego’s East County) - A new bill aims to let California residents hang clothes out to dry, legalizing use of clotheslines.

A generation or two ago, air-drying freshly washed clothing was commonplace.  But some landlords have restricted the use of clotheslines for aesthetic reasons.

Now Assembly Bill 1448, introduced by Assemblywoman Patty Lopez of San Fernando, would classify clotheslines as “solar energy systems” since they rely on sunshine to dry clothes instead of gas or electric dryers that rely on fossil fuels that contribute to green house gas emissions.

If the measure passes, landlords won’t be able to ban clotheslines, and renters seeking to save energy can air-dry their laundry freely.
