November 3, 2014 (San Diego's East County)--East County Magazine invited all candidates for the GUHSD to be interviewed: two incumbents and four challengers.
Two challengers responded: law student Steve Mattia and Barbara Stevens, who wants to apply her financial training to the job. You can listen to their interviews here:

The stakes are high in this race, with a board majority that defied a Grand Jury order, leading to lawsuits filed against the district over its failure to build an Alpine High School despite two bond measures approved by voters that included funds for that purpose.
Incumbents Jim Kelly and Robert Shield, who have consistently opposed the Alpine school, are up for reelection. Gary Woods, who was previously voted off the board and opposed both bond measures and the school, is seeking to win his seat back. Shirley Anderson is also running. Anderson, Stevens and Mattia all support building a high school for Alpine.
A heavyweight player has weighed into the race, with the Sycuan tribe funding an independent expenditure campaign on behalf of Anderson and Stevens. Children from the Sycuan tribe are among those impacted by the board’s refusal to build the long-promised high school in Alpine.
