November 16, 2019 (San Diego) - Bolstered by Ryan Agnew's career-high passing performance and an opportunistic defense, San Diego State defeated Fresno State 17-7 in a Friday night clash at SDCCU Stadium in the Battle for the Old Oil Can.
With the victory, the Aztecs (8-2, 5-2 MW) clinch at least a share of the West Division title in the Mountain West for the fourth time in the conference's two-division era and can secure a berth in the MW Championship Game on Dec. 7 with a win at Hawai'i next Saturday night (Nov. 23).
Agnew enjoyed his finest game statistically as a collegian, completing 33 of 47 passes for 323 yards, all career-highs, with one interception and one touchdown, helping SDSU snap a two-game losing streak to the Bulldogs (4-6, 2-4 MW). In addition, the Aztec senior improves to 14-3 as the team's starting quarterback, which marks the best winning percentage (.824) in SDSU's Division I history.
Wide receiver Jesse Matthews was Agnew's favorite target, setting personal-bests with eight catches for 119 yards, while Chase Jasmin finished with six receptions for 40 yards and one touchdown to go with 31 yards and another score on the ground.
Fresno State drew first blood at the 7:05 mark of the first quarter on a three-yard burst up the middle by Ronnie Rivers, capping a five-play 71-yard drive. The short touchdown was set up by a 53-yard strike from quarterback Jorge Reyna to Zane Pope down to the Aztec 16.
However, the Bulldogs were held scoreless for the remainder of the game, thanks to an SDSU defense that yielded just 70 yards rushing and picked off three passes, including two by Luq Barcoo.
Following Brandon Heicklen's 54-yard punt that pinned Fresno State inside its own 5, Tariq Thompson made the Aztecs' first interception at the Bulldog 22, stepping in front of a third-down pass intended for Pope, which put the Scarlet and Black in business.
After an eight-yard completion to Isaiah Richardson, Fresno State was flagged for pass interference in the end zone, giving SDSU a first down at the 2. On the very next play, Jasmin swept around left end for the tying touchdown with 2:39 remaining in the period.
The Aztecs gave themselves another short field on the next series, as Barcoo intercepted Reyna at the Bulldog 36. However, SDSU lost nine yards on its first two snaps before Agnew was promptly picked off by Chris Gaston, who returned the ball to the Fresno State 42.
The Aztec defense rose to the occasion, stuffing the Bulldogs on a 4th-and-1 at the SDSU 49 early in the second quarter.
Buoyed by a 29-yard completion to Matthews, the Aztecs subsequently drove deep into Fresno State territory before Matt Araiza booted a 22-yard field goal to put the hosts on top 10-7 with 9:57 left in the period. Facing a 3rd-and-goal from the five-yard line on the previous snap, Agnew hit Parker Houston for an apparent touchdown, but the score was overturned by a booth review.
After an exchange of punts, the Aztecs had a chance to pad their lead with 1:42 remaining in the half, marching 49 yards in 10 plays down to the Fresno State 25. Agnew got things rolling with a a trio of completions to Daniel Bellinger that netted 22 yards, while Jasmin soon followed with a 12-yard gain on a swing pass to the Bulldog 28.
After mustering just three yards on its next three plays, SDSU hoped to salvage three additional points, but Araiza's 42-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Ricky McCoy with six seconds showing on the clock.
The Aztecs squandered another opportunity on their first possession of the third quarter, driving to the Bulldog 11, highlighted by Agnew's 21-yard completion to Chance Bell on 3rd-and-14. Two plays later, however, Bell fumbled at the 2-yard line after a tackle by Arron Mosby, as Alex Cruz made the recovery.
SDSU finally gave itself some separation early in the fourth quarter when Agnew hit Jasmin on a two-yard scoring strike just inside the right pylon to punctuate a 10-play, 72-yard drive. On the second play of the series, Agnew threaded a 16-yard pass to Matthews, while Jasmin subsequently darted 20 yards down to the Fresno State 12 following a roughing the passer penalty.
The Bulldogs threatened on their next series, advancing all the way to the Aztec 4, aided by a pair of pass interference penalties, along with a 17-yard completion to Emoryie Edwards and a 16-yard run by Rivers.
However, Fresno State self-destructed with a holding penalty and a bad exchange between Reyna and Rivers. Facing a 3rd-and-goal at the SDSU 13, Reyna caved to the Aztec pass rush, throwing an ill-timed interception to Barcoo, who kept both feet in bounds along the far sideline at the 4.
With 8:02 left in the game, SDSU controlled the clock for all but the final eight seconds before turning the ball over on downs at the Bulldog 13.
In addition to Barcoo's heroics, Dwayne Johnson posted a team-high eight tackles, including five solo stops, while Cameron Thomas and Myles Cheatum each recorded a sack.
As a team, the Aztecs outgained the Bulldogs in total offense 425-206 and held the ball for 12 minutes (36:05-23:55).
Agnew's effort marked the first time an SDSU quarterback threw for over 300 yards since Quinn Kaehler racked up for 326 yards in a 30-14 victory over Air Force on Nov. 21, 2014, a span of 65 games.
