October 14 (Wednesday, 7:30 pm)Warwick's is hosting author Arthur Benjamin to present his book, The Magic of Math. Arthur Benjamin, Ph.D., is a professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California. Dr. Benjamin's articles have been featured in Scientific American and Discover. He is coauthor of Mathemagics. This event is free and open to the public. Reserved Seating is available. Only books purchased from Warwick's will be signed.

The Magic of Math is the math book you wish you had in school. Using a delightful assortment of examples from ice cream scoops and poker hands to measuring mountains and making magic squares, this book empowers you to see the beauty, simplicity, and truly magical properties behind those formulas and equations that once left your head spinning. You'll learn the key ideas of classic areas of mathematics like arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus, but you'll also have fun fooling around with Fibonacci numbers, investigating infinity, and marveling over mathematical magic tricks that will make you look like a math genius!

A mathematician who is known throughout the world as the mathemagician, Arthur Benjamin mixes mathematics and magic to make the subject fun, attractive, and easy to understand. In The Magic of Math, Benjamin does more than just teach skills: with a tip of his magic hat, he takes you on as his apprentice to teach you how to appreciate math the way he does. He motivates you to learn something new about how to solve for x, because there is real pleasure to be found in the solution to a challenging problem or in using numbers to do something useful. But what he really wants you to do is be able to figure out why, for that's where you ll find the real beauty, power, and magic of math.

If you are already someone who likes math, this book will dazzle and amuse you. If you never particularly liked or understood math, Benjamin will enlighten you and with a wave of his magic wand turn you into a math lover.

October 14 (Wednesday, 7:30 pm)Sarah Weinman, the editor of the new books, Women Crime Writers: Eight Suspense Novels of the 1940s & 50s: A Library of America Boxed Set (Hardcover). The Library of America and editor Sarah Weinman redefine the classic era of American crime fiction with a landmark collection of eight brilliant novels by the female pioneers of the genre, the women who paved the way for Gillian Flynn, Tana French, and Lisa Scottoline.

Though women crime and suspense writers dominate today s best seller lists, the extraordinary creations of the mid-century female pioneers of the genre are largely unknown. Their work, influential in its day and still vibrant and extraordinarily riveting, is long overdue for rediscovery. Now The Library of America makes these classic books available in a deluxe two-volume collector s edition.

From the 1940s, here are Vera Caspary s famous career girl mystery Laura; Helen Eustis s intricate campus thriller The Horizontal Man; Dorothy B. Hughes s In a Lonely Place, the terrifyingly intimate portrait of a serial killer; and Elisabeth Sanxay Holding s The Blank Wall, in which a wife in wartime is forced to take extreme measures when her family is threatened.

The 1950s volume includes Charlotte Armstrong s Mischief, the nightmarish drama of a child entrusted to a psychotic babysitter; Patricia Highsmith s brilliant The Blunderer, which tracks the perverse parallel lives of two men driven toward murder; Margaret Millar's Beast in View, a relentless study in madness; and Dolores Hitchens s Fools Gold, a hard-edged tale of robbery and redemption.

October 15 (Thursday, 6:00 pm)Warwick’s presents Anne Romney, bestselling author and founder of the Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases, who will be signing her memoir, In This Together. Signing line will operate on a first-come first-served basis. This is a meet-and-greet event. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the National MS Society Pacific South Coast Chapter.

When Mitt and Ann Romney met in their late teens, a great American love story began. And their life together would be blessed: five healthy sons, financial security, and a home filled with joy. Despite the typical ups and downs, they had a storybook life.

Then, in 1998, Ann was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She couldn't believe it was real; there were no therapies or treatments to help her. Mitt told her that day that they would tackle the diagnosis as a team: They were in it together. As long as it isn't fatal, we're fine. If you have to be in a wheelchair, I'll be right there to push it, he told her. And Ann thought, But I'll be the one in the wheelchair. A caregiver and helper her whole life, she'd crossed a terrible invisible line. She wouldn't be able to care for her family anymore. She was the patient. Ann and Mitt would face the most frightening and humbling experience of their lives.

From reflections on her early life, her marriage, and her diagnosis and recovery, the sources of her faith, and the stories of others who overcame adversity and inspired her to keep going, In This Together is a brave and deeply honest portrait of a family facing an unexpected blow, often in the most public of circumstances.

A lot of people talk about a transformation that happens when life throws you a curve ball, and the big one in my life was my MS diagnosis. With all the blessings I've had, MS has been my greatest teacher: It has taught me about faith, compassion, and serving others. I've met many people along the way who've shared advice and demonstrated enormous resilience in the face of challenges; their stories gave me strength. In sharing my story, I want to give others hope as I've been given hope on this journey.

October 16 (Friday, 7:30 pm)Warwick's is hosting New York Times bestselling author William Paul Young to talk about and sign his newest novel, Eve. William Paul Young is the bestselling author of The Shack. This event is free and open to the public. Reserved Seating is available.

The Shack shattered our limited perceptions about God. Eve will destroy harmful misconceptions about ourselves. From the author of the 25-million copy bestseller The Shack comes a captivating new novel destined to be one of the most important and talked-about books of the decade.

When a shipping container washes ashore on an island between our world and the next, John the Collector finds a young woman inside – broken, frozen, and barely alive. With the aid of Healers and Scholars, John oversees her recovery and soon discovers her genetic code connects her to every known human race. She is a girl of prophecy and no one can guess what her survival will mean…

No one but Eve, Mother of the Living, who calls her daughter, and invites her to witness the truth about her story – indeed, the truth about us all.

Eve is a bold, unprecedented exploration of the Creation narrative, true to the original texts and centuries of scholarship – yet with breathtaking discoveries that challenge traditional misconceptions about who we are and how we’re made. As The Shack awakened readers to a personal, non-religious understanding of God, Eve will free us from faulty interpretations that have corrupted human relationships since the Garden of Eden.

Eve opens a refreshing conversation about the equality of men and women within the context of our beginnings, helping us see each other as our Creator does – complete, unique, and not constrained to cultural rules or limitations.

Thoroughly researched and exquisitely written, Eve is a masterpiece that will inspire readers for generations to come.

October 22 (Thursday, 7:30 pm)Warwick's is hosting the author Avi Spiegel who will present his new book, Young Islam. Avi Spiegel specializes in Middle Eastern and North African politics. He earned a doctorate from Oxford University, a master’s degree from Harvard University, and a law degree from NYU. He has been a Fellow at the Brookings Institution, the Ali Pachachi Scholar of the Modern Middle East at Oxford, a Frederick Sheldon Fellow at Harvard, and a Fulbright Scholar and Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco. This event is free and open to the public. Only books purchased from Warwick's will be signed.

Today, two-thirds of all Arab Muslims are under the age of thirty. Young Islam takes readers inside the evolving competition for their support – a competition not simply between Islamism and the secular world, but between different and often conflicting visions of Islam itself.

Drawing on extensive ethnographic research among rank-and-file activists in Morocco, Avi Spiegel shows how Islamist movements are encountering opposition from an unexpected source – each other. In vivid and compelling detail, he describes the conflicts that arise as Islamist groups vie with one another for new recruits, and the unprecedented fragmentation that occurs as members wrangle over a shared urbanized base. Looking carefully at how political Islam is lived, expressed, and understood by young people, Spiegel moves beyond the top-down focus of current research. Instead, he makes the compelling case that Islamist actors are shaped more by their relationships to each other than by their relationships to the state or even to religious ideology, by focusing not only on the texts of aging elites but also on the voices of diverse and sophisticated Muslim youths, Spiegel exposes the shifting and contested nature of Islamist movements today – movements that are being reimagined from the bottom up by young Islam.

The first book to shed light on this new and uncharted era of Islamist pluralism in the Middle East and North Africa, Young Islam uncovers the rivalries that are redefining the next generation of political Islam.

October 23 (Friday, 7:00 pm)Book Signing: Rooville by Julie Long. Even after thirteen years in Southern California, Owen Martin can feel the corners of his squareness still sharply evident. He’s a TV weatherman bored by the beautiful climate. He wants to coach basketball but all the kids play soccer. And he seems to be the only person who thinks a fruit smoothie is a poor substitute for a vanilla shake. When he’s fired from his job, Owen is relieved to head home to Iowa, to the town his ancestors founded and the simple life he knew before his father died.

In his absence, Martinville has become the center of the Transcendental Meditation movement and host to all things alternative. There are golden domes for mass meditations, a vegan café where the burger joint stood, and all the shop doors around Town Square now face east. But far worse than anything is the danger to the Martin family farm. In a town divided between “Regulars” and “Roos” (gurus), Owen is clear where he stands until he falls for a levitator instead of the down-to-earth girl he had in mind. With old customs and open-mindedness clashing like warm and cold fronts, Owen gets caught in a veritable tornado.

About the Author: A hard-working businesswoman, Ingrid Croce is widely credited with leading the revitalization of the City’s historic Gaslamp Quarter. In 1985, she opened Croce’s Restaurant & Jazz Bar as a tribute to her late husband, musician Jim Croce.

October 14 (Wednesday)Read and Critique at UC San Diego. Writing can be a lonely business! Come get enthused, excited, productive and make a new writing family. This fun, interactive, 9 week class starts soon and is open to all levels and genres.

Read and critique is a way – possibly the only way – for writers to hear how their writing sounds to others. The thoughtful, objective and constructive feedback you receive will tell you how your writing is being perceived, what is working and what needs additional work. Read and critique also enables writers to learn more about the craft through the careful reading of others’ work. In addition to the weekly review of manuscripts, mini-lessons inspired by the work at hand will be given by the instructor. Participants will be required to bring copies of manuscript pages of work-in-progress.

Note: Open to all levels, beginner to advanced, including writers of long and short fiction, screenplays, plays, creative non-fiction, and memoirs.

October 16 (Friday, 6:30-8:30 pm)Information: Join the Nonfiction Authors Association's San Diego chapter at San Diego Writers Ink (2730 Historic Decatur Rd., Barracks 16, Suite 202). Bonnie ZoBell, author of What Happened Here, presents on the topic of “DIY Book Tours.”

Bonnie’s award-winning novel, What Happened Here, was inspired by the real-life PSA Flight 182 crash of 1978. Although she writes fiction, Bonnie has plenty of great tips for authors who are looking to create their own book tours, with ideas for drawing people to local events as well as setting up successful readings in far-flung locales. Learn how to put together your own DIY tour here in San Diego, or take your show on the road.

In addition to our speaker, monthly chapter meetings include time allotted for informal networking, group announcements, raffle prizes, and a group mastermind session to help attendees with any issues they may be facing on their publishing journey.

Attendance is $15 in advance, $20 at the door. For more information, or to reserve your seat in advance, please see http://www.meetup.com/San-Diego-Chapter-Nonfiction-Authors-Association/events/222692167/

The featured speakers are both hybrid authors — they have published with traditional publishers and they have self published. Although both write romance, Jan Moran writes contemporary fiction and Judith Lown writes traditional Regency romance, they will be sharing advice that will help any writer who wants to publish. Register at http://bit.ly/1YPcicX

As a fragrance and beauty expert, Jan Moran has been featured in numerous publications and on television and radio, including CNN, Women’s Wear Daily, Allure, InStyle, and O Magazine. As an editor and writer, she has covered fragrance, beauty, and spa travel for a variety of publications such as Cosmopolitan, Costco Connection, and Porthole Cruise. She writes the Hostile Beauty contemporary series, which includes Flawless, Beauty Mark, and other upcoming titles.

A Ph.D. in clinical psychology, Judith Lown uses systems theory to create a back-story, which provides a realistic foundation for motivation of her characters—frivolous, idealistic, manipulative or courageous. Set in the Regency Period, her stories provide an escape into an era ruled by manners but her proper characters are fueled by passion.

October 26, (Monday, 6:30 pm)At the 4th Monday meeting of the San Diego Writers/Editors Guild, the speaker will be Richard Lederer, author of 50 books about language, history, and humor, and a member of SDW/EG, will present “Fascinating Facts About Our Presidents.”

History quizzes by Lederer and Caroline McCullagh appear daily in the SD Union-Tribune and his “Lederer on Language” column is published on page B-2 each Saturday. His column has exhas explored retronyms (an adjective-noun pairing generated by a change in in the meaning of the noun). For example, once there were simply telephones. Then came cellphones and smartphones, and now we have landlines. One column explained mnemonic devices: a shortcut memory aid to storing facts fast and accurately, such as Every Good Boy Does Fine (the musical notes on the treble-clef lines). The American Trivia Quiz Book, a companion to American Trivia: What We All Should Know About U.S. History, Culture & Geography, will complement his. Lederer’s “Monsters Unchained” book is timely in October for celebrating Halloween with young family members.
