SDG&E
will host a series of fire preparedness community meetings on November 17,
18 and 19 in Valley Center, Alpine and Pine Valley to discuss its proposal
to shut-off power during high fire-risk periods.
“The "power shut-off" portion of our Emergency Fire Plan has
been suspended until next year's fire season (at least),” Don Parent,
SDG&E public affairs manager, wrote in an e-mail to ECM. “In
the meantime, we're doing several things to communicate with our customers
to help clear up the misconceptions about the plan, its over-all intent as
well as the many things that we ARE doing that the customer won't necessarily see but will
contribute to overall safety during the fire season.”
The shut-off proposal has sparked controversy among back-country residents
and drawn fire from some public officials including State Senator Dennis Hollingsworth
and Supervisor Dianne Jacob at a recent California Public Utilities hearing
in San Diego, as ECM previously reported. The utility
maintains that shutting off power during high winds and hot, dry conditions
is necessary to prevent more devastating fires. Last week, the State
of California announced plans to sue SDG&E to recover damage costs from
wildfires allegedly caused by power lines owned by the utility.
