February 18, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State lacrosse team received goals from 10 different players Saturday to key its 16-4 victory over visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in its lone exhibition game of the 2017 campaign at Aztec Lacrosse Field.

SDSU dominated the first half, building an insurmountable 10-0 advantage in the first 21 minutes of action en route to the big win.

Senior Alex Watson led the balanced Aztec offense with three goals on the afternoon, while fellow classmate Kristen Hickey, sophomore Kirstie Greenlaw and freshmen Taylor Sullivan and Morgan Taylor finished with two tallies apiece. SDSU also received individual goals from seniors Vickie Porter and Kayla Deitz, junior Elizabeth Rourke, sophomore Natalie Peel and freshman Ryli Quinn.

In addition, Quinn led all players with seven draw controls, while Peel tied for game-high honors with four ground balls. The Aztec cause was also aided by sophomore Grace McGinty, who notched three draw controls of her own to go along with two ground balls, while Hickey tacked on two draw controls, two ground balls, two caused turnovers and one assist to her total.

SDSU got on the board first with three quick goals by Deitz, Watson and Taylor during a span of 1:10 early in the opening period, forcing the Division III Athenas to play catch-up for the remainder of the contest.

The Aztecs took an 11-1 advantage into halftime following Rourke’s goal off an assist from Ijeoma Ikpe with 1:27 left before intermission. After the break, the Aztecs fashioned their biggest lead at 15-2 on Greenlaw’s first goal of the day with 8:45 to go in the game.

Senior Katie Merritt and sophomore Katy Sharretts split time in front the goal for the Scarlet and Black, with Merritt making two saves in the first half.

Collectively, SDSU outshot CMS 33-8 for the game, including a sizable 27-6 margin in attempts on goal. The Aztecs also maintained a 24-15 advantage in ground balls and a 15-7 spread in draw controls.

San Diego State resumes its regular-season schedule next week when it travels to the Midwest for a pair of non-conference games at Michigan (Feb. 24) and Detroit Mercy (Feb. 26).
