Aztecs remain in 15th in Las Vegas

March 7, 2017 (Las Vegas) - The San Diego State men’s golf team remained in 15th place after shooting a 12-over 300 on the second day of the Southern Highlands Collegiate at the Southern Highlands Golf Course.

Coupled with their 19-over 307 yesterday, the 22nd-ranked Aztecs are at 31-over 607, seven shots behind No. 25 Arizona State (24-over 600) on the par-72, 7,374-yard layout.

 

PJ Samiere carded SDSU’s lowest score for the second consecutive day with an even-par 72 to move up 16 spots into a tie for 26th at 2-over 146. Samiere, who shot a 74 in the first round on Monday, had four birdies and four bogeys in the second round. Three of his four birdies came on par-5’s.

 

Blake Abercrombie followed his 3-over 75 yesterday with a 5-over 77 today. After two rounds, his 8-over 152 is tied for 53rd out of 79 players. Abercrombie opened with three bogeys, and finished the round with five bogeys, a double bogey and two birdies.

 

Otto Vanhatalo was three shots better Tuesday, carding a 5-over 77 and is tied for 72nd at 13-over 157 after two rounds. He had three birdies in Tuesday’s round, but also recorded six bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4, 359-yard fifth hole.

 

Nahum Mendoza III dropped from a tie for 69th to a tie for 77th after a 10-over 82. Mendoza III, who had a 6-over 78 on Monday, was just 2-over through his first 12 holes, but bogeyed the par-5, 605-yard third and was doomed with an 8 on the par-4, 404-yard fourth. He rebounded with a birdie on the fifth, a par-4, 359-yard hole, but bogeyed the seventh (par-4, 423 yards) and ended with a triple bogey on the ninth (par-5, 579 yards) to finish his round.

 

Gunn Yang, who was disqualified yesterday, had the second-best round for San Diego State today, carding a 2-over 74. He had two birdies and four bogeys on the day.

 

Heading into Wednesday’s final round, No. 7 USC leads the way at 7-under, 569, while No. 10 Stanford and No. 4 Oklahoma State are tied for second six shots back at 1-under, 575. No. 33 Pepperdine (+3, 579), No. 11 Texas Tech (+4, 580) and No. 19 UNLV (+4, 580) round out the top five.

 

California’s Collin Morikawa continues to lead the tournament after carding a 1-under 71 today. His two-round total of 7-under 137 leads USC’s Justin Suh (6-under 138) by one stroke.

 

The Aztecs wrap up the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Wednesday, teeing off at 10:20 a.m. PT with Arizona State and California.
