October 11, 2023 (Dallas) - The San Diego State men’s golf team took fifth place in the stroke play portion of the prestigious Jackson T. Stephens Cup on Tuesday in Dallas, one stroke out of advancing to Wednesday’s match play.

The Aztecs, who on Monday shot a tournament-low 22-under-par 266 in the second round, carded a 7-under 281 in today’s final round on the par-72, 7,369-yard Trinity Forest Golf Club, to finish at 31-under 833. Florida State (-51) and Arizona (-46) will match up in the finals on Wednesday, while SMU (-39) and LSU (-32) will meet for third place.

SDSU was the only team to finish all 36 holes yesterday and was in third place at the time, but dipped to fifth when the other teams completed their second round on Tuesday morning. San Diego State shot a 281 today but was edged out by LSU’s 284 as the Tigers had a four-stroke advantage entering the final round. Arizona (268) and SMU (276) each jumped LSU to clinch a spot in Wednesday’s match play. Stanford (-29) and Arkansas (-27) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the invitational event.

Sophomore Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) finished in a four-way tie for fifth place out of 42 entrants at 12-under 204 following a 3-under 69 today. Kowack sank five birdies with two bogeys in his final round, tying with Gray Albright and Fredrik Kjettrup of Florida State, and Jacob Skov Olesen of Arkansas. Arizona’s Tiger Christensen captured medalist honors in stroke play at 19-under 197, five shots clear of Florida State’s Cole Anderson (-14), followed by Arizona’s Zach Pollo (-13) and LSU’s Connor Gaunt (-13).

Junior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) was just a shot behind Kowack in solo seventh at 11-under 205. Starting from the 10th hole, Hastings was even-par through his first seven holes but recorded birdies on four of his final 11 holes to sign for a 4-under 68.

Sophomore Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for 24th at 4-under 212 following a 2-over 74 on Tuesday. Chokprajakchat was at 1-under through his first 15 holes, but finished bogey-par-double bogey to settle for a 74.

Competing in just his second event of the fall, sophomore Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) went 1-over today and tied for 34th overall at even-par 216. Oyama was quickly 2-over through his first six holes, but battled back with birdies on the par-5, 537-yard second and the par-4, 429-yard seventh to get back to even par for his round, before bogeying the par-3, 180-yard eighth and settling for a par on the par-4, 502-yard ninth.

Junior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) logged his first under-par round of the week at 1-under 71 and tied for 36th at 2-over 218. Lague got to 3-under today with a birdie on the par-4, 440-yard sixth, but went bogey-par-bogey for a 1-under 71.

San Diego State returns to action in the spring with the Southwestern Invitational Jan. 29-31 at North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village, California.
