SDSU MEN'S TENNIS' COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT IN 4-3 LOSS TO NEVADA

April 16, 2023 (San Diego) - The San Diego State men’s tennis team faced the Nevada Wolf Pack at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 16 in SDSU’s final home match of the 2023 spring season. The Aztecs won the doubles point, Chikaya Sato did not lose a game and four other singles matches went to a third set, but San Diego State fell just shy of a victory in a 4-3 loss.

The Scarlet and Black drop to 2-13 overall and 0-4 in conference this season, while the Wolf Pack improves to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

In doubles, on the third court, Andre Saleh and Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice battled Satchel Benn and Pedro Liborio and earned a 6-4 victory. Alexander Mandma and Bora Sengul went up against Matheo Coupu and Youssef Kadiri Hassani on court No. 2. In a tight match, the Aztecs won 7-5. On the top court, the team of Johannes Seeman and Sato faced Delmas N’Tcha and Juan Batalla but trailed 6-5 when SDSU won the doubles point.

On the second court, Sato (5-8) drew N’Tcha. Sato achieved a rare double bagel with a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Gonzalez Fitzmaurice (3-7) played on the No. 5 court versus Batalla. He took the first set 6-4 but lost a tight second 7-5. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice came back strong in the third set, winning 6-2.

Fresh off yesterday’s clinching win, Sengul (1-10) faced Kadiri Hassani on the third court. After he was bested 6-3 in the first set, Sengul won 7-5 in the second to force a third set. The last match going on, the third set would decide which team would be the winner. However, today would not be a repeat of yesterday as Sengul ran out of steam 7-5.

Mandma (4-6) played on the No. 4 court against Liborio. After falling 6-3 in the first set, he came back with a 6-0 second. He could not complete the comeback, losing 6-4 in the third.

On the top court, Seeman (5-7) battled Coupu. After taking the first set 7-6, he fell 6-4 in each of the remaining sets.

Saleh (1-7) played Loris Zisswiller on the sixth court. He fell 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets.

San Diego State will finish up its regular season next week with matches at New Mexico on Thursday, April 20 and Air Force on Saturday, April 22.
