San Diego State was knocked out in the quarterfinal round by No. 72 Boise State 4-1 on Wednesday.

April 27, 2023 (Las Vegas) - The 6-seed San Diego State men’s tennis team went up against the third seeded No. 72-ranked Boise State Broncos in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain West Championship at Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas on Wednesday, April 26. SDSU won a set on five singles courts, but it was not enough in a season-ending 4-2 loss.

The Scarlet and Black finishes the season with a 3-15 record, while Boise State improves to 19-7 overall heading into its semifinal matchup with Nevada.

On the third court, Bora Sengul (3-10) faced Caden Moortgat. He fell in a close first set 7-6 (5) but bounced back to take the second 6-3 and the third 6-2.

Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice (6-7) played on the No. 5 court against John Chin. After dropping the first set 6-2, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice came back to take the second 7-6 (2) and the third 6-1 to win his fifth straight match to close out his freshman season.

All-Mountain West singles and doubles honoree Johannes Seeman (5-10) went up against Simon Arca Costas on the top court. He was bested in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

His fellow All-Mountain West player Chikaya Sato (5-11) drew Sam Sippel on the No. 2 court. After falling 7-5 in the first set, he took the second by the same score but lost 6-2 in the third to clinch the match.

On the sixth court, Andre Saleh (1-8) went up against Idriss Haddouch. Saleh claimed the first set 6-2 but lost 6-4 in each of the ensuing sets to give Haddouch the point.

Alexander Mandma (5-6) played on the No. 4 court versus James Van Herzeele. Mandma won the first set 6-3 but was bested in the second 6-4. He trailed 5-4 in the third set when Boise State clinched the match.

In doubles, on the third court, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Saleh lost to Sippel and Jan Lucca Marquardt 6-2 to give the Broncos an early advantage. The other two matches were very close and went to tiebreakers. On court No. 2, Mandma and Sengul faced Van Herzeele and Moortgat. The Aztecs ended up on top 7-6 (6) to even things up. On the top court, the team of Seeman and Sato came up just short against Arca Costas and Michael Bott 7-6 (3) to give Boise State the doubles point.
