Aztec junior captures 14th event title of the season

February 10, 2024 (Flagstaff) - San Diego State standout Valentina Lopez Arevalo emerged triumphant in platform competition on Saturday to lead the Aztecs during the final event of the Lumberjack Diving Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona University.

Lopez Arevalo compiled a two-round total of 536.50 points, including a score of 274.00 in the finals to shatter an NCAA Zone qualifying standard (225.00) and easily outdistance the second-place competitor Mira Tinani of New Mexico State (447.70) for the crown.

 

With her victory, the SDSU junior captured the event title at the same meet for the third consecutive season, giving her 14 individual crowns for the year.

 

Along with Lopez Arevalo’s success, the Aztecs placed three additional divers in the top 10 on Saturday at Wall Aquatic Center.

 

Flagstaff native Alina Skrocki finished in third position among 16 competitors with an aggregate total of 447.30 points, including a season-best tally of 238.75 points in the preliminaries to surpass the NCAA Zone qualifying mark.

 

After posting a preliminary round count of 203.45 points, Summer Westmoreland vaulted seven places into the fifth position, eclipsing an NCAA Zone qualifying standard of her own with a collegiate-best total of 227.50 points in the finals for a collective score of 430.95.

 

Likewise, Jessica Schroeder displayed upward mobility as well, moving up four spots into 10th place with a two-round score of 414.75. The SDSU freshman was slotted 14th the preliminaries before notching a season-high score of 222.90 in the finals.

 

Elsewhere, Olivia Zamudio finished 12th with an aggregate score of 403.70, highlighted by a final-round total of 212.00, while Jules Harrison landed in the 15th spot for the day with a combined 380.50 points.

 

The San Diego State swim and dive program will shift its focus to the Mountain West Championships, scheduled for Feb. 21-24 in Houston, Texas. The Aztecs are seeking their third consecutive conference title and fourth in the last five years.
