The Aztecs lose 72-71 after trailing by as much as 16 points

February 14, 2024 (Reno) - The Aztec women’s basketball team’s 16-10 (7-6) rally at Nevada (13-12, 7-5) fell just short, falling 72-71. SDSU trailed by as much as 16 points and had the ball in the closing seconds with a chance to win but couldn’t get a shot up before the clock expired.

In the Aztecs’ last two games, they had overcome deficits of nine and 12 points, but Wednesday’s 16-point deficit proved to be too large.

SDSU had four players score in double-digits, led by Adryana Quezada’s 15 on 6-for-9 shooting. Quezada also led SDSU with eight rebounds.

Jazlen Green had her best game in her brief SDSU career with 13 points. Jada Lewis also added 13 and Abby Prohaska had 12.

The Aztecs shot 52% from the floor and held Nevada to 36% shooting, but the Wolfpack had a 16-2 advantage on the offensive glass which allowed them to attempt 18 more shots than SDSU.

SDSU was efficient from the floor in the first half, but struggled with turnovers, especially in the first quarter and found themselves down double-digits at the end of the first quarter.

The Aztecs were held without a three in the first half, were outscored 11-1 in points off turnovers and trailed by 14 points at the halftime break.

SDSU began the third quarter on a 14-4 run to pull within four points. Nevada pushed their lead back to eight points early in the fourth quarter, but the Aztecs immediately responded with an 8-0 run to tie it at 66 with 3:44 remaining.

The Wolf Pack would hit two three-pointers down the stretch, but SDSU got a crucial defensive stop with seven seconds left. After a time out, the Aztecs got the ball to Quezada, their leading scorer, at the elbow, but the ball was poked away before she could get a shot off.

Nevada was led by Audrey Roden’s 19 points.

The Aztecs were outrebounded 38-30 overall and 16-2 on the offensive glass.
