October 5, 2023 (San Diego) - San Diego State women’s soccer won their third straight match with a 1-0 win over Boise State on Thursday evening at the SDSU Sports Deck. Alexys Ocampo provided the lone goal of the contest as the Aztecs moved into sole possession of first place in the Mountain West standings.

The Aztecs (9-2-2, 4-0-1 MW) and Broncos (5-2-6, 3-1-1 MW) felt each other out in the opening 20 minutes as each team looked for ways to attack the opposing defense. Then the game opened up in the 25th minute after both Boise State and the Aztecs had two great back-to-back looks. At the 25:01mark of the first half Alexa Madueno made a stop at the Aztecs end of the field before the ball found its way to Denise Castro 45 seconds later. Castro then took a shot, but it was well saved by the Broncos goalkeeper and the game remained knotted at 0-0.

The Aztecs would continue to knock on the door and in the 33rd minute they took the lead. Katie Senn picked up the ball on the right flank and found Alexys Ocampo. The sophomore then dribbled past a defender before taking on a shot that was chipped over the goalkeepers outstretched arms and found the back of the net to give SDSU a 1-0 lead.

Neither team was able to muster another shot on target in the half and the Aztecs took a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break. After the break both teams would search for a goal in the opening minutes, and Madueno was called into action in the 50th minute but made the stop to preserve the -0 advantage. After that Boise State effort it took until the 64th minute for either team to force a save out of the opposing keeper, as Carlin Blakes effort was parried away by the Broncos keeper. Madueno would make another stop in the 74th minute, but that would be the final stop of the night she would have to make as the Aztecs earned a 1-0 win on Thursday night.

Offensively for the Aztecs Alexys Ocampo led the way in shots with four, while Madueno made four stops in goal, while also picking up her third clean sheet of the season.

Up Next: The Aztecs wrap up their homestand on Sunday at noon against Utah State. The match will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.

Game Notes:

  • Alexys Ocampo tallied her second goal of the season, and the third goal of her career in the win.
  • Ocampo’s goal was also the second game winning goal of her career.
  • Alexa Madueno tallied the 20th shutout of her career in the win, moving her to fourth all-time in career shutouts.
