September 21, 2023 (Fresno) - San Diego State women’s soccer opened Mountain West play on Thursday evening with a convincing 5-1 win over Fresno State at the Bulldog Soccer Stadium in Fresno, California. The Aztecs poured in five goals on the night, while Alexa Madueno recorded her 250th career save in the win.

The Aztecs opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Denise Castro latched on to a low cross across the box to put the Aztecs up 1-0. The goal was Castro’s fifth of the season and her third in the past two games. Just 57 seconds later SDSU would double their advantage when Emma Gaines-Ramos dribbled through on goal and then poked the ball past the on-rushing keeper, putting the Aztecs up 2-0 after just 21 minutes.

Kali Trevithick scored her third of the season to start the second half, as the Aztecs came out strongly to begin the second half. Gaines-Ramos combined well with Carlin Blake down the left side. Blake then lofted a ball across the six-yard box and Trevithick got on the end of the cross and headed it home, and SDSU took a 3-0 lead with 53 minutes gone in the match.

Fresno State got a goal back three minutes later in the 58th minute when Clara Wilson slotted one home past Alexa Madueno in goal for SDSU. The Aztecs would respond almost immediately when Kali Trevithick tallied her second of the night. She picked up the ball just outside the 18-yard box and then slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to give SDSU a 4-1 lead with a half hour to play.

Jenna West would round out the scoring for the Scarlet and Black on Thursday night in the 78th minute. Dori Savage picked up a ball just outside the 18-yard box, dribbled into the box and then fired the ball into West who was crashing the six-yard box. West then knocked the ball past the keeper, and put the Aztecs 5-1 in front.

SDSU would control the final minutes of the game and ran out 5-1 winners. Offensively Trevithick led the way with two goals off of two shots, while Madueno had five saves on the night.
