February 25, 2024 (Seattle) - After not playing since last Sunday, the No. 73-ranked San Diego State women’s tennis team took the courts again on Saturday. Playing at Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, the Aztecs faced off against the Portland Pilots. SDSU won the doubles point and four singles matches including the top three courts as it earned a 5-2 victory to get back in the win column.

The Scarlet and Black improve to 6-2 while the Pilots fall to an even 5-5.

In doubles, Gloria Alogo and Zoe Olmos (2-5) played on the bottom court against Alaia Rubio Perez and Nadine Arbaizar Martinez. They held on to win 7-5. SDSU’s two returners, Andreea Velcea and Andjela Skrobonja (4-3), paired up on the second court. They faced Aleksandra Dimitrijevic and Meagan Pearson. The Pilots forced a tiebreaker, but the Aztecs won nonetheless 7-6 (7-2). Yasmine Kabbaj and Myah Petchey (2-3) played on the top court against Sally Pethybridge and Rimona Rouf. The Aztecs fell 6-2.

In singles, No. 53-ranked Kabbaj (7-0) played on the top court against Pethybridge. The reigning Mountain West Player of the Week held on to win a tight first set 7-5 before closing out her opponent 6-3 in the second.

Facing Pearson on the bottom court, Olmos (4-4) was the only other Aztec to win in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Playing on court two, No. 106 Skrobonja (7-1) took the first set 6-4 from Rubio Perez. After dropping the second 7-5, Skrobonja bounced back to win the deciding third set 6-2 to clinch an Aztec victory.

On the third court, Petchey (4-1) was coming off an injury that forced her to retire from her match last weekend. She was back in the lineup with the Aztecs only having six players and went up against Dimitrijevic. She fell 7-5 in the first set but came back to earn victories in the ensuing two sets 6-4, 6-3.

Velcea (5-3) faced Rouf on court No. 5. She was bested 6-3, 6-0.

The final match to finish was Alogo (4-3) against Arbaizar Martinez on the fourth court. Alogo won 7-5 in the first set but could not close out her opponent, falling 6-3 in the second and then again in the tiebreaker of the third set 7-6 (7-4).

San Diego State will play at the same venue in a true road match against Washington at noon tomorrow.
