Aztecs finish off first tournament with six wins on Sunday

September 30, 2018 (San Diego) - San Diego State women's tennis wrapped up the final day of its Fall Classic I, finishing the weekend with wins in two doubles matches and four singles events.

In the red doubles bracket, sophomore Abbie Mulbarger and freshman Aesha Patel captured a 7-6 (3) win over UTEP’s Milena Baigorria and Rine Nozaki, but freshmen Agustina Rimoldi Godoy and Ellie Ashley were unable to overcome Autum Prudhomme and Martina Lo Pumo (GCU), dropping a 6-1 match.

The Aztecs also split in the black doubles draw, where senior Jenny Moinard and junior Mia Smith claimed a 6-4 victory over Ludovica Infantino and Valentina Mokrova (GCU). Senior Magda Aubets and sophomore Nnena Nadozie were hoping to snag a victory in the championship draw, but were overrun by TJ Fumagalli and Kristin Kerrigan (AFA) 6-1 in the matchup.

In singles action, Nadozie captured a championship victory in the white bracket over Kirsten Prelle of UTEP, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Aubets was not as lucky on the other end of the bracket, dropping a 6-3, 6-4 decision to CSUN’s Skyla Alcon in consolation play.

The Aztecs were not able to capture a win in the gold draw, where Smith fell in a close 6-4, 6-4 match to Emilia Occhipinti (GCU) in the consolation draw and Moinard dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Air Force’s TJ Fumagalli in the championship round of the draw. Despite the challenges in the gold draw, Ellie Ashley snagged her third straight singles victory in the silver round robin bracket with a 6-2, 6-2 match against Amanda Reinhart (AFA).

SDSU came up on another split in the red singles bracket where Rimoldi Godoy topped UTEP’s Milen Baigorria 6-4, 6-2 in consolation play, and Mulbarger dropped a 6-4, 6-2 match to Ashleigh Harvey (AFA) in the championship draw. The Aztecs earned their sixth win in Patel’s three-set win over Alex Kuo (AFA), where Patel went 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

UP NEXT

The Aztecs will take on a number of teams in their second of three fall tournaments, the ITA Southwest Regional, at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego from Thursday, Oct. 18, through Monday, Oct. 22.
