October 16, 2011 (La Mesa) -- Police are investigating two robberies, one at a Motel 6 and the other at an Arco gas station that occurred about 90 minutes apart in La Mesa.

The first robbery occurred at the Motel 6 at 7621 Alvarado Road shortly before 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, October 12. The second occurred at the Arco gas station at 3775 Massachusetts Ave., at approximately 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, also October 12.

The Arco station clerk was standing on the sidewalk outside the front doors of the Arco station when he was approached by two thieves. The first thief simulated a handgun by reaching into his waistband and then demanded the clerk’s wallet. When the clerk told the thief he did not have a wallet, the thief demanded money from the cash register. The clerk and both thieves entered the Arco station store and when the clerk opened the register, the first thief took the cash drawer out of the register while the other thief took a variety of cigarette packs from the display. Both thieves exited the store with an undetermined amount of money, and were last seen running north through the parking lot towards Waite Drive. The clerk was not injured during the robbery. The thieves were not located and their identity is not known.

One of the thieves was described as a black male, mid 20’s, 6’3”, 185 pounds, with a thin build. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark pants, and concealed his identity with a nylon mask.

The second thief was described as a black male, mid 20’s, 6’0”, 170 pounds, with a thin build. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark pants; he also concealed his identity with a nylon mask.

Police are also investigating a robbery that occurred Wednesday night in La Mesa at the Motel 6 at 7621 Alvarado Road near Comanche Drive at 10:12 p.m. The clerk told officers that two men armed with handguns came into the lobby and demanded money.

The first thief pointed a black revolver at the clerk and demanded the money from the register. The clerk pulled out the entire cash drawer from the register and handed it to him. Both thieves were last seen running east on Alvarado Road with the cash register drawer and an undetermined amount of money. The clerk was not injured during the robbery. The thieves were not located and their identity is not known.

One of the thieves was described as black, 20 to 25 years old, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and 215 pounds. He was wearing a dark gray sweatshirt, gray pants, and a dark nylon mask over his face and was armed with a black revolver.

The second thief was described as black or Latino, 25 to 30 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, and 160 to 180 pounds. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and a black baseball cap with a red design.
He was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun.

Though the descriptions in both incidents were similar, it was not clear if the same pair was responsible for both heists, police said.
