San Diego Joins List of Counties Eligible for State Aid Because of Winter Storms
December 24, 2010 (San Diego)--Acting California Gov. Abel Maldonado proclaimed an official state of emergency in San Diego County Friday because of the recent winter storms, making the County eligible for state aid.
County officials notified Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s office Thursday that they intend to proclaim a local state of emergency early next week, after County crews determine the extent of the local damage and costs.
While the County was spared widespread damage from this week’s storms, it did suffer significant damage in several specific areas. The worst-hit areas included the railroad tracks of the North County Transit District, the Mission Valley area, the Santa Margarita River, and several roads and bridges in the unincorporated county. County crews are continuing to respond and assess the damage, its costs and what will be needed for recovery.
County officials said Saturday that they were grateful that acting Gov. Maldonado had proclaimed the state of emergency, which makes state disaster assistance funds available to County agencies.
The state has also proclaimed states of emergency in several other counties, including: Inyo, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Tulare.
