January 17, 2024 (San Diego)—Brandon Andrew Yates, 24, died in custody yesterday at San Diego County Jail. Deputies conducting a safety check found him unresponsive and displaying signs of distress around 1:36 p.m.

Medical staff and deputies immediately began life saving measures including CPR, Naloxone and an AED. The paramedics arrived and assumed medical care. Despite these efforts, Yates was pronounced deceased at 2:14 p.m. by a hospital doctor, according to Lieutenant Joseph Jarjura.

Yates was arrested on January 15 by the San Diego Police Department for burglary.  He had a residence in the city of San Diego at the time of his arrest.

Yates is the second in-custody death locally this year.  On January 6,  Eric Wolf, 33, was found in medical distress inside his cell and was pronounced dead a half hour later.

Wolf, who had no permanent address, had been arrested for violating a court order.

As is the protocol for all in-custody deaths, the Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and will conduct a thorough investigation of both deaths. The cause and manner of death for each man will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.

The Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) representative was notified of these incidents and responded to the scene.

“We extend our sympathies to the Yates family and those affected by this death. A Sheriff's Family Liaison Officer will support the family as they deal with the loss of a loved one,” a statement from the Sheriff's department says.
