March 20, 2024 (Lakeside) — An all-night search by the Sheriff’s volunteer Search and Rescue unit resulted in safely locating a man who had been missing for over 14 hours in Sycamore Canyon Preserve.

The search began after the 57-year-old man failed to return from a hike in Sycamore Canyon. He had begun his hike at 9 a.m. and his family reported him missing at 1 p.m.

A Sheriff's Command Post was established at the Sycamore Canyon County Preserve, which includes portions of Poway and Lakeside.

Volunteers with the Sheriff's Search and Rescue unit searched the area with the assistance of the Sheriff's ASTREA helicopter throughout the night.

This morning around 3 a.m., the man was found alive on one of the hiking trails in Sycamore Canyon. He was transported to a local hospital and his family was notified.

The Sheriff’s Department thanks the all-volunteer Search and Rescue team, which performs wilderness and urban rescues, as well as searches for missing and at-risk persons.

Teams are available 24 hours per day to respond to local, state and federal agency requests.  To learn more or become a volunteer, visit https://www.sdsheriff.gov/recruitment/search-and-rescue

Have someone to check in with when you go on a hike

Wow! I am soooo glad his family reported him missing! It sounds like it saved the man's life; they located him at 3 a.m.? Thank God for the many miracles. Good family, good response by Sheriff's ASTREA helicopter and the all volunteer search and rescue; PRAISE THE LORD! I'm so glad this story has a happy ending. Here's praying to a full and speedy recovery and THANK YOU volunteer search and rescue; you saved a life! I guess the moral of the story is volunteers save lives and always check in with someone when you're out hiking and let them know exactly what ground you plan to cover.
