June 19, 2017 (Chicago) - The Padres’ series against the Brewers wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been, but now the Friars had to play the defending world champion Cubs, who they did sweep earlier this year at Petco.  Clayton Richard started game one tonight against Jon Lester for Chicago.

The Padres took advantage of the Cubs’ apparent World Series hangover early.  Jose Pirela hit a line drive solo homer to center in the first to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.

Yangervis Solarte added another solo shot in the third to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Cubs got on the board with Anthony Rizzo’s sac fly in their half of the third that scored Albert Almora Jr. and the Padres led 2-1.

The Cubs eventually did tie it up on Wilson Contreras’ solo homer in the seventh.  Almora Jr. gave the Cubs the lead with a double that scored Javy Baez.  The Padres threatened in the ninth, but the Cubs weren’t allowing another sweep and won 3-2 to take game one.

Game two is tomorrow night at the same time:  5:05 p.m.  Jhoulys Chacin starts against Mike Montgomery for the Cubs.

Transaction news:

  • LHP Dillon Overton claimed off waivers from Mariners; optioned to AAA El Paso
  • RHP Zach Lee designated for assignment
