August 11, 2022 (Washington, D.C.) - After an excellent home series against the Giants, the Padres took their confidence on the road to our nation’s capital for the weekend.  Mike Clevinger started tonight’s game one against Cory Abbott for the Nationals.

Ha-Seong Kim started the scoring with a single in the fourth that scored Brandon Drury and the Padres led 1-0 after four.

Manny Machado added more with a double in the fifth that scored two.  Machado then scored and Trent Grisham blasted a three-run homer.  Juan Soto knocked an RBI base hit to left to score Austin Nola.  Ildemaro Vargas scored on a sac groundout in the home half of the fifth and the Padres led 8-1 after five.

In the sixth, Vargas struck again with a single to right that scored Joey Meneses and the Padres led 8-2 after six.

Drury hit a long two-run homer to left in the eighth and the Padres led 10-2 after eight.

The Nats threatened in the ninth.  Maikel Franco hit a solo homer to left and Keibert Ruiz singled to score ex-Padre Luke Voit (awkward) and kick Taylor Scott out of the game.  He was replaced by Nick Martinez.  Josh Palacios scored on a fielder’s choice, but the Padres avoided a rally with a 10-5 win.
