July 28, 2023 (San Diego) - After a lackluster series against the Pirates, the Padres turned their attention back to the American League and welcomed the Rangers for the weekend. Dane Dunning started tonight’s game one for Texas against Grossmont High alum Joe Musgrove.
Juan Soto singled to score Ha-Seong Kim in the first and the Padres led 1-0 after one.
Manny Machado hit a sac fly in the third to score Trent Grisham and the Padres led 2-0 after three.
Fernando Tatis Jr. blasted a solo homer to center in the fifth and the Padres led 3-0 after five.
The Rangers bobbled a routine fly ball to left in the sixth, allowing Jake Cronenworth to score from second. With the bases loaded, Tatis Jr. hit a big line drive single to right to score Luis Campusano. Two more scored on a ground ball to right by Machado and the Padres, shockingly, save for a bases-loaded walk by Marcus Semien in the ninth, got the 7-1 win over the Rangers in game one.
