May 16, 2019 (San Diego) - After a lackluster series in Los Angeles, the Padres headed back down south to home to welcome the Pirates for the weekend.  Trevor Williams started for Pittsburgh against Eric Lauer.

The Padres almost scored in the first with the bases loaded, but blew that opportunity.  But Franmil Reyes got revenge in the third with a solo homer--his 13th of the year--to give the Padres a 1-0 lead after three.

Lauer experienced his usual meltdown in the fifth when a series of errors led to runners at the corners for the Pirates.  On a single from Adam Frazier, Kevin Newman beat Lauer’s throw home to tie the game at one after five.

Adam Warren replaced Lauer in the sixth with two men on and things got worse.  Warren threw a wild pitch that allowed Elias Diaz to score from third and the Pirates to take a 2-1 lead after six.

Luckily, Ian Kinsler showed up and saved everyone’s you-know-whats with a massive three-run blast to left field in the bottom of the sixth and suddenly, the Padres were back in front 4-2 after six.

The Pirates got within one with Gregory Polanco’s third home run of the year--a line drive to right--in the seventh, but the Padres hung on to take game one of a four-game series 4-3.
