April 29, 2023 (Mexico City) - The Padres and Giants had the special privilege this year of playing a two-game series in Mexico City. Ex-Padre Sean Manaea started for San Francisco against Grossmont High alum Joe Musgrove.
The Padres took the lead in the first in an insane way. Nelson Cruz hit a ball that bounced off of Manaea, went past third, allowing Cruz to double and two runs to score and the Friars led 2-0 after one.
Manaea threw a wild pitch in the second that scored Austin Nola from third with the bases loaded and the Padres led 3-0 after two.
Brandon Crawford put the Giants on the board in the third with a solo homer to left. LaMonte Wade Jr. did the same, but Cruz gave the Pads some insurance in the bottom half with a solo homer. Nola singled up the middle to score Jake Cronenworth and the Padres led 5-2 after three.
But Mitch Haniger took it all away in the fourth and blasted a three-run homer to left and Musgrove was done. Brent Honeywell Jr. came in and gave up a three-RBI triple down the left field line to Thairo Estrada. Juan Soto and Xander Bogaerts helped out a little in the home half with solo homers and the Giants led 8-7 after four.
Fernando Tatis Jr. saved the day with a two-run fly ball homer to right in the fifth. Manny Machado added the fifth Padres homer of the day and the Friars led 10-8 after five.
The game was tied again in the seventh by Blake Sabol’s deep two-run bomb to right. And David Villar launched a solo shot to deep left to give the Giants their fifth homer, but Machado saved the day with a two-run blast to right center and the Padres led 12-11 after seven.
Trent Grisham hit a gapper to right center in the eighth that scored two. Cruz singled to right to score two and the Padres rocked the Giants in Mexico City 16-11.
