July 15, 2023 (Philadelphia) - The Padres’ bats were happy the second half was upon us yesterday in a big win in Philly.  They played a doubleheader today.

Game two

Blake Snell started game two against Ranger Suarez for the Phillies.

The Padres started off big again.  Trent Grisham blasted a three-run homer in the second and the Friars led 3-0 after two.

The Phillies bounded right back in the sixth with an RBI double off the left field wall by Brandon Marsh that scored two and Kyle Schwarber finished the job in the seventh when the first pitch from Nick Martinez was punished to center for a game-tying home run and we were tied at three after seven.

But Manny Machado saved the day in the eighth with a solo homer, but in the home half, Bryce Harper beat out a throw to first, allowing Bryson Stott to score from third.  The Phillies took the lead on Schwarber’s next RBI single that scored Marsh.  Trea Turner lined a single to left that scored Harper and the Phillies came from behind to take game two 6-4.

Game three

Ryan Weathers started against Taijuan Walker for Philly in game three.

Ha-Seong Kim scored in the first and the Padres led 1-0 after one.

But it was short-lived.  Bryce Harper hit a solo homer in the fourth and we were tied at four after four.

Grisham reclaimed the lead for the Padres in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Rougned Odor, but Schwarber blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth and the Phillies led 4-2 after five.

Johan Rojas hit his first major league hit, an RBI single in the sixth, to score Stott and Trea Turner singled to score Edmundo Sosa and the Phillies led 6-2 after six.

In the seventh with the bases loaded, Sosa was hit by a pitch by Brent Honeywell Jr., allowing Harper to score from third.  Garrett Stubbs walked, allowing Alec Bohm to score.  Rojas hit another RBI single to score Stott and the Phillies led 9-2 after seven.

Juan Soto tried to help in the eighth with a long RBI double to center that scored Kim, but the Phillies swept the doubleheader with a 9-4 win in the nightcap (Jake Cronenworth scored on a wild pitch).
