May 17, 2023 (San Diego) - The Padres probably went into this series thinking “oh, it’s the Royals, we’ll sweep them easily, no big deal.” But alas, the Royals reminded the Padres that they are, in fact, the Padres and evened the series last night. Both teams went for the series win today. Carlos Hernandez started for the Royals against Yu Darvish.
M.J. Melendez gave the Royals the lead in the fourth inning with a double that scored Bobby Witt Jr., but Jake Cronenworth tied it up in the fifth with a solo homer and we were tied at one after five.
From then on, the Royals took over. Vinnie Pasquantino blasted a two-run homer in the sixth, Maikel García doubled to score Melendez, but Matt Carpenter scored on a balk in the home half and Xander Bogaerts singled to score Ha-Seong Kim and the Royals held on to win the series with a 4-3 victory.
