ECM PADRES REPORT: WALK-OFF HOMER IN NINTH STUNS PADRES

March 19, 2023 (Mesa, Ariz.) - The Padres went to Mesa to take on the Cubs today.  Julio Teheran started against Justin Steele for Chicago.

The Padres struck first.  Brandon Dixon singled to score Adam Engel and the Padres led 1-0 after one.

 
Yan Gomes put up the equalizer with a solo homer in the fourth and we were tied at one after four.
 
Gomes gave the Cubs the lead with a single in the sixth that scored Trey Mancini and Chicago led 2-1 after six.
 
Brett Sullvian saved the day in the eighth with a triple that scored David Dahl and we were tied at two after eight.
 
It looked like it was going to end in a draw, but in the ninth, Nelson Velasquez smacked a three-run walk-off homer and the Cubs stunned the Padres with a 5-2 win.

The Padres get a day off tomorrow before another night game against Colorado on Tuesday in Peoria.  First pitch is at 6:40 p.m. and can only be seen on MLB.com.  Peter Lambert starts for Colorado against Michael Wacha.
