May 22, 2016 (San Diego) - The Padres looked for the sweep in game three of the series against the Dodgers.  Kenta Maeda started on the hill for LA against Colin Rea for San Diego.

Like last night’s game, it was a pitcher’s duel.  Until the fifth, that is, when Christian Bethancourt hit a single with Melvin Upton Jr. on third to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.  Wil Myers hit a shallow pop-up to left that Yasiel Puig tried to be flashy and make a diving catch, but the ball went past him and Myers drove in three on a triple and San Diego took a 4-0 lead.

In the sixth, the Dodgers got a run back on a Corey Seager single that scored Enrique Hernandez and the Padres led 4-1.  Kevin Quackenbush took Rea’s place and threw a wild pitch, scoring a run and the Padres’ big lead was cut to 4-2.  Former Padre Adrian Gonzalez hit a single up the middle to drive home Seager and the Padres saw their lead cut to 4-3.

The Padres held off that rush, but in the seventh, Justin Turner hit a solo home run that tied the game at four.

The Padres avoid sweeping like a small child being asked to do their chores.  In the eighth, Howie Kendrick hit a solo home run to give the Dodgers their first lead of the game, 5-4.

But not so fast!  Guess who tied the game?  Well, technically Myers, but it was on a triple by Upton and the Padres tied the game at five in the eighth.

Thanks to Melvin, the ballgame went to extra innings for the second day in a row.  Unlike last night, this one DID go past 15 innings.  In fact, it went 17 innings.  The Padres were on their last reliever, Luis Perdomo.  The Dodgers were using their starting pitchers.  Surprisingly (or rather not surprisingly, considering the Padres’ inability to sweep), the Padres caved in and Puig broke the game open for the Dodgers in the 17th with a single to score two and make the score 7-5 LA.  Joc Pederson made it 8-5.  And finally, Puig came home to give the Dodgers a final 9-5 lead and avoid the sweep.

The Padres embark on the road again, this time to San Francisco once more to take on the Giants tomorrow night at 7:10.  Drew Pomeranz against Johnny Cueto--a decent pitching matchup.
