AS FIRST SERIES OF JAN. 6 HEARINGS ENDS, WATCHDOGS SAY TRUMP 'MUST BE PROSECUTED'

"Trump did what he did—and refused for hours to stop the violence—because it was part of a determined, months-long plan to carry out a coup. This was a crime."

July 26, 2022 (Washington, D.C.) - The House January 6 committee's first series of public hearings came to a close Thursday with a primetime event featuring fresh evidence that former President Donald Trump gave a "green light" to the right-wing mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol last year and ignored pleas to stop the violence.

BIDEN TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID, HAS MILD SYMPTOMS, WHITE HOUSE PHYSICIAN SAYS

By Miriam Raftery

July 21, 2022 This morning, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19.  According to a White House briefing, he is fully vaccinated and twice boosted and experiencing very mild symptoms.    The 79-year-old President has begun taking Paxlovid, an anti-viral medication effective during the first several days after symptoms appear.

According to the White House physician Kevin O’Connor’s letter, those symptoms include a runny nose, fatigue and a dry cough.

The President’s last negative test was Tuesday; the positive result was found during routine testing for the President. All contacts since Tuesday will be notified, per the White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

“Consistent with CDC guidelines, he will isolate at the White House and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time.  He has been in contact with members of the White House staff by phone this morning, and will participate in his planned meetings at the White House this morning via phone and Zoom from the residence,” the release states.

CONGRESSWOMAN JACOBS PRESIDES OVER HOUSE PASSAGE OF RIGHT TO CONTRACEPTION ACT; ISSA VOTES NO ON PROTECTING ACCESS TO BIRTH CONTROL

By Miriam Raftery

July 21, 2022 (Washington D.C.) – San Diego Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (CA-53) presided over the House Floor today during the passage of H.R. 8373, the Right to Contraception Act.

Congresswoman Jacobs is a co-lead of the bill introduced by Congresswoman Kathleen Manning in response to Justice Clarence Thomas calling for reconsideration of Griswold v. Connecticut, the landmark ruling which declared states could not outlaw birth control access for married couples.

East County’s Republican Congressman Darrell Issa voted against the bill, as did the vast majority of Republicans though several did cross party lines to vote in favor. The measure passed by a 228-195 margin.

Jacobs  gave an impassioned floor speech in support of the measure, which was also backed by San Diego’s other three Democratic representatives (Scott Peters, Mark Levin, and Juan Vargas.)

JAN. 6 COMMITTEE TIES TRUMP ACTIONS TO EXTREMIST GROUPS THAT ORGANIZED VIOLENCE AT CAPITOL

By Christianne McCormick and Miriam Raftery

View full hearing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrUa0hfG6Lo&t=189s

July 21, 2022 (Washington D.C.) – Last Tuesday’s hearing by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2020 attack on the U.S. Capitol revealed new evidence, which exposed then-President Donald Trump’s use of social media to influence his followers, including violent extremists in designated hate groups.

Testimony revealed that instead of conceding the election after extensive briefings by top legal advisors informing him that he lost, Trump instead took actions that incited violence and inspired coordination among extremist groups including the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, whose leaders have been charged with seditious conspiracy. Evidence also showed coordination between key Trump advisors and extremist leaders in the days leading up to the January 6th insurrection. A former Oath Keepers member testified to how he was swayed by Trump's deceptions and a documentary filimmaker confirmed the group's violent intentions.

Trump's White House Counsel Pat Cippolone, former Attorney General Bill Barr and others have testified that Trump was fully informed that no fraud sufficient to overturn election results had been found, after 60 judges found no evidence to overturn any election results. But the President continued to spread the false claim that the election was stolen, pressured Vice President Mike Pence to illegally stop certification of electoral votes, and sought to corrupt the Department of Justice to make false claims.

Republican Senator Liz Cheney said of Trump, “He had access to more information than almost any other American that the election was not stolen,” adding, “No rational or sane man could ignore that or reach an opposite conclusion.” Yet Trump ignored advice of top legal advisors and his own campaign chairman, relying instead on unsubstantiated and debunked legal theories promoted by his personal attorney, Rudy Giiuliani,

The committee presented evidence laying out a disturbing timeline of events:

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TAKES STEPS TO PROTECT SOME ABORTION ACCESS, LAUNCHES WEBSITE TO HELP WOMEN FIND REPRODUCTIVE CARE

By Miriam Raftery

July 21, 2022 (Washington D.C.) – After the Supreme Court ruled that states can ban or restrict abortion access, overturning Roe v. Wade, the Biden administration has taken several actions to protect abortion access in certain circumstances. Specifically:

  • The administration cited a law on the books since 1986, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), which requires abortions be allowed in all states if a woman’s life or health is at stake; hospitals that refuse can lose Medicare and Medicaid funding.
  • The Health and Human Services (HHS) Department warns that pharmacists must dispense medications used for miscarriages and early-term abortions, or face potential criminal penalties. Attorney General Merrick Garland similarly issued a statement that states cannot ban mifepristone, a drug approved by the FDA for early pregnancy termination among other uses.
  • HHS launched a website to help people nationwide find reproductive care and understand their rights at https://reproductiverights.gov/
  • President Joe Biden signed an executive order to protect patient privacy and access to emergency contraception and medication abortions.
  • HHS has advised pharmacies not to discriminate based on types of contraception sold, if any birth control items are sold in their retail stores.

PROTESTS ERUPT AFTER SUPREME COURT OVERTURNS ROE V. WADE, ALLOWS STATES TO END ABORTION RIGHTS

By Miriam Raftery

June 24, 2022 (Washington D.C.) – Ending a half century of women’s rights to end a pregnancy, the U.S. Supreme Court today issued a ruling overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

That means abortion becomes illegal in 26 states immediately due to trigger laws or older statutes on the books, many banning abortion even to save a mother’s life or prevent a rape or incest victim from being forced to give birth. More states are poised to consider banning or restricting abortion, while Republican leaders have pledged to seek a nationwide abortion ban if they regain control of Congress in November.

Today’s decision has sparked protests nationwide, including thousands protesting outside the Supreme Court and justices’ homes this evening, as well as a large crowd gathered in San Diego outside the County adminstration building at Waterfront Park.

SANTEE COUNCIL REMOVES FANITA RANCH FROM NOVEMBER BALLOT; COLLINSWORTH CRIES FOUL

By Mike Allen

June 13, 2022 (Santee) -- After the Santee City Council voted last week to remove the Fanita Ranch project initiative from the November ballot, environmental activist Van Collinsworth called the move not only a slap in the face of local voters, but a clear message that the 3,000-unit development will never go to a vote.

The Council voted unanimously June 8 to take an earlier approved referendum on the project off the ballot because all pf the project’s legal approvals were already rescinded last month. The Council removed those approvals made in 2020 to comply with a judge’s recent ruling, which found the project’s environmental impact report deficient.

That report did not include impacts of a last-minute change by the Council to eliminate a key exit route in case of a wildfire evacuation, a lapse which the court found violated the California Environmental Quality Act requirements.

CONGRESSWOMAN JACOBS CALLS FOR U.S. TO LEAD WITH VALUES AS CONFERENCE ON AMERICA COMPETES ACT BEGINS

Jacobs appointed to bicameral committee tasked with finalizing bipartisan legislation to boost competitiveness with China

East County News Service

June 13, 2022 (Washington, D.C.) - Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (D-CA-53) called for the United States to lead with our values and support coalition building at the first public meeting of conferees on the House and Senate’s bipartisan innovation and competitiveness legislation last month. Jacobs is one of only two freshman Democratic members serving on the Conference Committee.

Earlier this year, the House passed the America COMPETES Act (America Creating Opportunities for Manufacturing Preeminence in Technology and Economic Strength), a comprehensive package to improve supply chains, encourage more American manufacturing, and strengthen our diplomatic efforts, while the Senate passed similar legislation, the United States Innovation and Competition Act. Speaker Pelosi appointed Congresswoman Jacobs to serve as a conferee for the bipartisan and bicameral conference committee that is tasked with resolving the two bills and bringing a final version forward.

The bill authorizes increased funding for the National Science Foundation and other research priorities, and aims to strengthen STEM education programs, boost American economic competitiveness and enhance research security.

JANUARY 6 COMMISSION BOMBSHELLS: TRUMP KNEW HE LOST, GLOATED AS CAPITOL WAS ATTACKED AND REFUSED TO SUMMON HELP

Some GOP members of Congress sought pardons for their roles in failed coup attempt, refused to testify, Cheney says

By Miriam Raftery

June 10, 2022 (Washington D.C.) -- The Senate’s Select Committee investigating the violent January 6, 2020 attack on the U.S. Capitol presented several shocking revelations during its first public hearing televised in prime time on June 9.

Chairman Bennie Thompson called the Jan. 6 attack an attempted “coup” (hear audio) and made clear that former President Donald Trump knew that the election was not stolen. He played video of Trump’s Attorney General, Bill Barr, testifying that Barr had repeatedly told Trump that there was no evidence of election fraud, even advising the President that such claims were “bulls**t.”  (hear audio). Thompson said the committee will prove in subsequent hearings that Trump organized a coup in an attempt to violently overthrow the U.S. government.

Next, ranking Republican Liz Cheney provided more evidence that Trump knew his stolen election claims were false. Even Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, told the selection committee that she believed Attorney General Barr.  (hear audio). Top campaign advisors to the President also counseled him that he had lost the election, and 62 judges including some appointed by Trump found no evidence of fraud.

Cheney asserted that Trump oversaw a seven-part plan to overturn the 2020 election.

A committee source told CNN that those seven steps were:

Attorney General William Barr says he told Trump there was no election fraud
