July 24, 2016 (Washington D.C.) – All of San Diego was up bright and early to watch the Padres take on the Nationals in the series finale.  Christian Friedrich started for San Diego, while the rookie Lucas Giolito took the mound for Washington.

Things didn’t start off so great.  After a leadoff triple by Trea Turner, Daniel Murphy hit a sac fly that scored him and gave the Nats a 1-0 lead.

But then they turned around.  With the bases loaded in the third, Wil Myers hit a single.  Though he was later caught in a run-down that he was tagged out on, Derek Norris and Travis Jankowski scored and the Padres jumped out in front 3-1.

In the Nats’ half of the third, Jayson Werth tagged a ball to center for a sac fly that scored Giolito and the lead was 3-2 Padres.  The Nats tied the game at three on a Murphy sac groundout and then Wilson Ramos put the nail in the coffin with a two-run homer that gave the Nats a 5-3 lead.

The Padres got a run back in the fourth with Ryan Schimpf’s single that scored Poway High alum Alex Dickerson and the Nats’ lead was cut to 5-4.

But the Nats ran away with it.  Ramos singled in the fifth, scoring Murphy and the Nats went back out in front by two 6-4.

After Shawn Kelley was brought in to relief pitch for Blake Treinen in the eighth, the Padres did their worst.  Back-to-back solo home runs by Dickerson and Schimpf tied the game at six.  It was a whole new ballgame.

Yangervis Solarte saved the game from extra innings with a single in the ninth that scored Myers and the Padres took a 7-6 lead.  One run would’ve been enough, but the Pads added some more just to be sure.  Alexei Ramirez doubled, scoring three runs and the Padres took the series from the Nats two games to one with a 10-6 win.

The Padres are heading to Canada for the first time ever!  Game one of Padres-Blue Jays is tomorrow at 4:07 p.m.
