August 5, 2016 (San Diego) - After a good series against the Brewers, the Padres saw the Philadelphia Phillies for the first time since April. Christian Friedrich got the start for San Diego against a man who was the subject of heavy trade rumors, Jeremy Hellickson.
The Padres struck first in the second with a single by Jose Rondon that scored Alex Dickerson for a 1-0 lead.
With the bases loaded in the third, the Padres finally capitalized and added onto their lead with a sac fly by Dickerson that scored Travis Jankowski and the score was 2-0 Padres.
But as quickly as the Padres got the lead, it went away just as fast. Cameron Rupp launched a three-run jack in the Phillies’ half of the fourth that put the Phils ahead of the Pads by one, 3-2.
Rupp struck again in the sixth with a double that scored Maikel Franco and made the score 4-2 Phillies.
The Padres inched to within one on a solo homer by Alexei Ramirez in the seventh, but the Phillies pulled away with Tommy Joseph’s single in the eighth that scored Cesar Hernandez and made the score 5-3.
The Padres got to within one again on another solo homer by Wil Myers to make the score 5-4, but that would be all the rallying they’d do as the long ball hurts them yet again.
Game two is an earlier start tomorrow night at 5:40.
