SNOW CLOSES SCHOOLS IN MOUNTAIN AREAS, CHAINS REQUIRED ON HIGHWAYS

Winter storm warning in effect for mountains through Thursday, Feb. 8 at  12 p.m.

February 7, 2024 (San Diego’s East County)—Several inches or more of snow blanketed San Diego County’s mountains overnight.  Snow fell in Julian, Pine Valley, and many other mountain communities, with more precipitation forecast today.

Due to weather and road conditions, several school districts are closed and have a snow day today, according to the San Diego County Office of Education:  Julian Union Elementary , Julian Union High, Mountain Empire,  Spencer Valley,  Warner Unified.

Chains are required on key highways included Sunrise Highway and Chihuahua Road from San Felipe, per the County Department of Public Works. Chains are also required to access Palomar Mountain.  If traveling in the mountain areas today, be sure to carry chains.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for San Diego County mountains, in effect until Thursday, 2/8/24, at 12:00 p.m.

  • Severe weather conditions are expected, including heavy wet snow.
  • Winds will gust as high as 60 mph tonight and early Thursday. 
  • Damage to trees and power lines is possible.
  • If you must travel, plan on difficult travel conditions.
  • Keep an extra flashlight, blanket, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

 

The most widespread showers will continue to move inland into San Diego County early this morning with brief heavy downpours. Hourly rainfall will mostly be one-tenth to locally one-third inch, the National Weather Service predicts.
