FEDS SEIZE PROPERTY OF POTRERO RANCHER CONVICTED OF ALIEN SMUGGLING

December 12, 2014 (Potrero) – A federal jury yesterday has convicted Potrero resident Kala Rains, 47, on seven counts of conspiracy and alien smuggling.  The ranch used by Rains and co-conspirators to harbor undocumented immigrants should be forfeited to the U.S. government, jurors determined following a trial before Judge Anthony Battaglia.

GANG MEMBERS INDICTED FOR SEX TRAFFICKING OF EAST COUNTY SCHOOL GIRLS

December 11, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)—U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy today revealed that 22 alleged gang members and associates are charged in a federal grand jury indictment with participating in a racketeering conspiracy involving the cross-country sex trafficking of underage girls, including many who were recruited from East County middle and high schools.

December 11, 2014 (El Cajon )—“There’s a good chance that our police officers saved the lives of four kids today,” Councilman Gary Kendrick told East County Magazine, reflecting on the dramatic rescue of the  children for whom an Amber Alert had been issued. The body of their mother had been found in another vehicle and their abductor was their father, who was believed to be armed and dangerous.

EL CAJON MOVES FORWARD ON POLICE BODY CAMERAS

December 11, 2014 (El Cajon ) – By a 5-0 vote, El Cajon’s City Council voted Tuesday to have a study done on the feasibility of body cameras for the city’s police force.

Councilman Gary Kendrick, author of the proposal, told East County Magazine that his research found body cameras elsewhere have reduced complaints against police officers by 80% and that assaults against police officers went down 57%.

AMBER ALERT SUSPECT DANIEL PEREZ TAKEN INTO CUSTODY; CHILDREN SAFE

 

December 11, 2014 (Santee) – Amber Alert suspect Daniel Perez was taken into custody this morning following a chase across East County, with his four children safe. According to CHP, Daniel Perez, 43, of Montebello, and his four sons was in his 2014 Toyota Camry and stopped on the onramp from State Route 52 to Highway 67 in Santee by barricades.

Fransisco Paiva Sousa is charged with oral copulation by force and false imprisonment with force.

SPRING VALLEY MURDER OF DARIUS REEVES REMAINS UNSOLVED; SHERIFF SEEKS HELP TO FIND KILLERS

 

December 8, 2014 (San Diego's East County) - The Sheriff's Homicide Unit wants your help in finding the persons responsible for the murder of a man in the East County.

On July 1, 2014, deputies responded to a shooting at an apartment complex in the 9100 block of Kenwood Drive in an unincorporated area of Spring Valley. When they arrived, they found the body of a man later identified as 24-year-old Darius Reeves.

JULIAN SCHOOL VANDALISM SUSPECTS ARRESTED

December 8, 2014 (Julian)—Sheriff’s deputies have arrested three teens reportedly caught in the act spray painting graffiti on buildings at Julian Union High School on Saturday.  They are suspected in several prior vandalism cases with damage of nearly $40,000 total.

December 5, 2014 (Valley Center) – A bomb threat e-mailed to an NBC news station threatened to place explosives targeting San Diego Gas & Electric Company work trucks over a land use dispute in Valley Center. 

Sheriff’s Bomb and Arson investigators shut down the Spearhead Trail area for two hours yesterday afternoon to assure that it was safe.

Subsequently, deputies arrested Frits Versteegh, a nearby resident who sent the threatening email, said Sergeant Jeff Lauhon.

IT'S A WRAP: SHERIFF NABS PACKAGE THIEF IN EAST COUNTY

December 3, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – A Grinch suspected of stealing holiday packages across East County is now in custody,  the Sheriff’s office reports.

The thief nabbed over a thousand dollars worth of packages in Lemon Grove, Spring Valley and unincorporated areas of El Cajon from November 21st until the thief was finally caught on December 3rd.

REALTOR CONVICTED OF PROSTITUTION WITH YOUNG GIRLS IN EL CAJON

Lustig, 77, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for prostitution-related crimes.  Lustig admitted that he paid for sex with a 13-year old girl on several occasions after he was caught on surveillance video at an El Cajon motel.

EX-DIRECTOR CONVICTED OF STEALING FUNDS FROM INDIAN HUMAN RESOURCE CENTER

December 1, 2014 (San Diego)--The Indian Human Resource Center’s former executive director, David Hedley from San Diego, has been convicted of stealing funds from the federal agency. Hedley was sentenced to spend five months in prison and to pay back $141,260 that he stole.

BRAWL ENDS IN DEATH OF HOMELESS MAN IN SANTEE

November 29, 2014 (Santee) – Two homeless men sustained blunt force injuries in a fight on a bike trail under State Route 52 and one has died.   Deputies responded to a call on Saturday, November 29th at 5:19 p.m.  Six people have been arrested by deputies, including one juvenile, said Lieutenant John Maryon.

"The six people we have in custody are not homeless," he said, adding that investigators are looking into what prompted the altercation. Those arrested are 18-year olds Cassidy Rowin, Sasrah Baillie and Brian Kish, 19-year-old Tyler Dare and Danny Swan III, and a juvenile whose name has not been released.

AUTOPSY CONFIRMS HOMICIDE, VICTIM IDENTIFIED IN LEMON GROVE

November 27, 2014 (Lemon Grove)—An autopsy by the County Medical Examiner has confirmed that a man found dead near railroad tracks in Lemon Grove was a homicide victim.  He has been identified as Dale Robert Wheeler, 55, the Sheriff’s homicide unit announced on November 25th.

A suspect has not yet been identified.

IRS PHONE SCAM REPORTED IN EAST COUNTY

November 26, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – East County resident Tom Lemon reports that he has received three scam phone calls from callers claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  The caller claimed Lemon owed money to the IRS and asked him to send it to a P.O. Box.

“The caller spoke with a European accent and I knew something was wrong,” Lemon told East County Magazine. “The caller ID was spoofed, another dead give away, and I hung up.”

SUSPECTS CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER IN SANTEE

 

November 25, 2014 (Santee) – Three suspects were arrested November 20th for the attempted murder and robbery of Robert Johnson, 20. Johnson was assaulted and stabbed repeatedly by three men outside the Walmart in Santee on November 9th.

WOMAN DIES AFTER ALLEGED ASSAULT IN EL CAJON

November 24, 2014 (El Cajon ) – Homicide detectives are investigating the death of Linda Sue Irwin, 53. 

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call from Sharp Grossmont Hospital at 7:37 p.m. on November 19 to investigate an alleged assault on Ms. Irwin believed to have occurred in the El Cajon area between November 17th and 19th. Shortly after deputies arrived, the victim was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she died this morning.

November 25, 2014 (San Diego) -- Today, San Diego State University has issued a statement indicating that fraternities  on campus are suspending all activities indefinitely due to recent sexual assaults on campus, including a rape at a frat house over the weekend--the seventh sexual assault on campus since the fall semester began.  Leaders of the Greek groups on campus pledged that they will “immediately take proactive steps toward addressing this extremely serious issue and the Greek community's role in it."

November 24, 2014  (San Diego) Updated November 25, 2014—A group calling itself “Concerned students of San Diego State University” has sent a letter to SDSU’s president, state legislators and Governor Jerry Brown urging an end to “rape culture.”

There have been at least seven reported rapes on campus in the fall 2014 semester, including five at fraternities, but no one has been arrested in any of those cases.

ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING REPORTED AT SDSU

November 23, 2014 (San Diego)—San Diego State University has issued a safety alert for students after a report of an attempted kidnapping shortly after midnight.

An SDSU student was walking home at 55th Street and Aztec Walk at 12:35 a.m. when she dropped her phone.  Before she could retrieve it, a man in a gold or silver Toyota Camry with a sunroof picked up the phone and went back to the vehicle, which had several passengers. Minutes later, that vehicle returned and the man offered the phone back to the victim. As she approached the vehicle, one of the occupants tried to pull her into the car.
