May 6, 2024 (El Cajon) -- The El Cajon Police Department announces success of a new approach to capturing retail thieves. In March, ECPD announced implementation of an innovative crime-solving technique utilizing the power of social media.

This approach aims to swiftly identify suspects and solve cases with greater efficiency, making an immediate and tangible impact on the community and retail theft.

“We are harnessing the power of social media to disseminate information,” said Chief of Police Mike Moulton. “In a matter of minutes, we are able to provide images and descriptions of thieves. Our community has responded by assisting our efforts and giving information that leads to arrests.”

FOUR SUSPECTED DRUG DEALERS ARRESTED IN RAMONA

May 6, 2024 (Ramona) -- Four people are behind bars on suspicion of selling drugs in Ramona. 

On Friday, May 3 around 7:00 a.m., deputies and detectives from the Ramona Sheriff's Substation conducted a search of a home in the 1300 block of Hanson Lane across the street from Ramona High School.

“An investigation by Sheriff's Detectives revealed drug activity may have been taking place at this home. There was also evidence that individuals wanted for outstanding warrants were staying there,” says Sergeant Sean Gallagher.

May 6, 2024 (El Cajon) -- The El Cajon City Council discussed matters of pivotal importance at its April 30 meeting, including a potential extension of the Proposition J sales tax measure. Council also approved a landmark deal with the Chaldean Community Council to create an incubator business program for refugees and immigrants, as well as funding social services. 
 
The half-cent sales tax increase has been in place since voters approved Proposition J in 2008. It generates $14 million, or about 13% of the city’s revenue stream, according to a report presented to the Council, and has been instrumental in continuing to provide much-needed funds for local police and fire departments. But it will sunset, or end, in 2028, unless a new ballot measure is approved to extend it.

May 6, 2024 (Lakeside_— Lindo Park Elementary School marked a special celebration today with a "Pie the Principal and Mr. Braun" event, recognizing students' achievements in their recent jog-a-thon fundraiser.
 
The exciting celebration gave students an unusual incentive: those who raised $50 or more could hurl a pie at Principal Ms. Green or Teacher Mr. Braun. Students who raised $100 or more enjoyed the chance to “pie” both.

As ECM reported on March 31, a GoFundMe site was launched to raised funds for the Bowens’ travel expenses to the summer Olympics. Andrew Harmon, whose three sons have all been mentored by Coach Bowen, set up the GoFundMe page, which has raised over $7,500.

E. COLI CASES LINKED TO ORGANIC WALNUTS

May 4, 2024 (San Diego) – A dozen people have become ill, including seven who were hospitalized, with E. coli infections linked to Gibson Farms organic walnut halves and pieces. The walnuts, which have been recalled, were sold in bulk bins at natural food stores and coops, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, though some of the walnuts may have been packaged in bags or clamshell packaging.

The walnuts were distributed in many states, but the illnesses to date occurred in California and Washington.

TRUMP LAWYER ARGUES TO SUPREME COURT THAT PRESIDENTS SHOULD HAVE IMMUNITY EVEN FOR ORDERING EXECUTION OF A POLITICAL RIVAL

May 3, 2024 (Washington D.C.) -- In April arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court,  former President Donald Trump’s lawyers argues that presidents should be immune from prosecution for any official acts done while they are in office,  unless the president is impeached and convicted by Congress.  But Trump attorney David Sauer’s argument, if accepted by the high court, would grant a president dictatorial powers even for violent acts committed for personal gain—by his own admission in arguments before the high court.

Liberal justices pushed back on that disturbing proposition.  Justice Elena Kagan pressed Sauer on whether ordering a military coup or selling nuclear secrets to a foreign power would be considered official acts that would prevent criminal prosecution of a president, and Sauer said such acts should be protected by presidential immunity.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor grilled Sauer on whether ordering execution of a political rival would be considered an official act. Sauer replied, “We could well see that as an official act.” Hear recording of this exchange.

SHIRTLESS FIREFIGHTERS TO SIGN CALENDARS AT DEANO’S PUB MAY 2 TO BENEFIT PROTECT SANTEE BALLOT MEASURE

MAY 1, 2024 (Santee) --“There’s not much we won’t do to protect our family, friends, and neighbors in Santee,” Santee firefighters say in a social media post promoting the launch of a new calendar to support the Protect Santee ballot measure.

People who like shirtless firefighters are invited to join the calendar launch party at Deano’s Pub East in Santee (11541 Woodside Ave., Suite D) on Thursday, May 2 from 6 – 9 p.m.. In addition to some good food and cold beer, attendees can get a calendar and an autograph from Santee’s homegrown hotshots.

But there’s a catch.

As the last days of the Protect Santee signature gathering come to a close, Santee residents will be asked if they can put their autographs on a petition of their own.

The Aztecs fell behind early by dropping the doubles point but came back with four singles wins on the five courts to finish in a 4-2 victory to bring home the Mountain West championship.

A DREAM FULFILLED: CHALDEAN COMMUNITY COUNCIL OPENS INCUBATOR BUSINESS CENTER IN EL CAJON

May 1, 2024 (El Cajon) – Opening an incubator business center to help refugees and immigrants start new businesses has been a dream of Dr. Noori Barka for more than a decade.  On April 11, that dream came to fruition at a ceremony launching the Chaldean Community Council’s new incubator business center at 405 East Lexington Avenue in El Cajon. The center will provide help for low-income and underserved refugee communities.

Supervisor Joel Anderson called the occasion a “joyous day” as he presented a check for a half million dollars from the County to the Chaldean Community Council to kickstart the incubator business center. He also issued a proclamation declarring April 11 El Cajon Small Business Incubator Day. Funding was through the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), the Small Business Stimulus Grant program, and the County’s Community Enhancement program.

 “For years, I’ve said we need an incubator to kick start businesses,” the Supervisor said. “In East County, we’ve got enterpreneurial spirit to be tapped,” he added, predicting that the enterprise will produce new entrepreneurs, “bringing wealth and opportunities to East County.”

He praised El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells after the city agreed to lease office space for the incubator business center for just a dollar a year, over the next five years.

MISSING CAMPO WOMAN FOUND SAFE

April 30, 2024 (Campo) -- A Feather Alert has been issued for a missing woman from the Campo Indian Reservation. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department wants the public's help in locating her.
 
On Monday, April 29, just after 11:00 p.m., 28-year-old Paula Connolly was reported missing to the Sheriff's Department. Deputies from the Sheriff's Rural Division immediately began investigating the disappearance. During the investigation, Connolly's vehicle and personal belongings were located at a hotel in Jacumba. However, there was no sign of Connolly.

PILOT INJURED IN EL CAJON CRASH

April 29, 2024 (El Cajon) – A pilot suffered moderate injuries after a single-engine Bellanca Super Viking plane crashed Sunday evening onto a sidewalk in the vicinity of Lily Avenue and Clarke Drive in El Cajon. The accident also knocked down power lines, causing an outage in the neighborhood to about 1,000 customers, according to SDG&E. No homes were struck and nobody else was injured.

April 27, 2024 (Alpine) -- With grocery prices skyrocketing and everyone looking for a way to cut back on costs, a fun and surprisingly low maintenance way to save money is by owning chickens. Now don’t mistake low maintenance for entirely no maintenance. Chickens aren’t just simply egg machines; some initial effort must be made. Here are some basic tips as well as things to avoid if you’re bringing chickens into your own backyard. 
 
My personal experience raising hens started five months ago when the skyrocketing egg prices and avian flu reports made me give into impulse and finally start a flock. I took the longer route of raising them from a young age, and this comes with its own set of pros and cons. A big issue new owners run into is figuring out whether their chicks are male or female, especially with most cities not allowing roosters. Experienced flock owners have methods such as wing shape, but the rest of us are left guessing if Betty is in fact a Bruno until a larger comb develops on boys at about six months.

April 27, 2024 (Santee) -- During the monthly Santee City Council Meeting on April 10th, Supervisor Joel Anderson stood alongside Santee Mayor John W. Minto, the San Diego Center for Economic Education at Cuyamaca College, and youth entrepreneurs to celebrate a local tutoring organization’s efforts in teaching financial literacy to families and children in Santee.

HEAR OUR INTERVIEW WITH JOLYANA JIRJEES, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE CHALDEAN COMMUNITY COUNCIL

April 26, 2024 (El Cajon) – Jolyana Jirjees, the new executive director of the Chaldean Community Council, recently sat down for an interview on East County Magazine’s radio show on KNSJ.  She was a winner of San Diego Metro Magazine’s 40 under 40 award, and is also an elected member of the Cajon Valley Union School District board of trustee.

A refugee herself who fled religious persecution in Iraq when she was 19 years old and pregnant, she recalls, ““In my community in Iraq, it was very difficult to travel from one place to another due to street bombings or children being kidnapped for ransom.”

She came to San Diego without knowing English or where to turn for help. Fortunately, she was able to earn a high school diploma at  Diego Valley, learn English, and obtain bachelor’s and master’s degrees from  San Diego State in sociology and counseling.

“After I graduated, my main passion was to help the newcomer refugees as I struggled to find my way when arriving to the US, she recalls.
